  • Pink - (6) 5"x 5 1/2", (2) 2"x 36" strips for the rainbow binding
  1. Begin by cutting all pieces listed above using your rotary cutter, cutting board and ruler.
  2. Stitch together all smaller (5"x 5 1/2") rectangles first using the attached pattern for reference. This will leave you with 8 completed blocks. Remember that the placement is supposed to look a bit random so it would be easy to rearrange if you preferred.
  3. It is important to note that these first 8 blocks are going to need to be cut down to a smaller size. Trim all four sides of the quilt block and square them off to be 13"x 14 1/2".
  4. You will now have 15 pieces that are all the same size (13"x 14 1/2"). Stitch these together to finish the top layer of the quilt. Make sure to reference the attached pattern for placement. Press.
  5. Sandwich your backing fabric, batting and quilt top together with the right sides of the quilt facing out.
  6. Make sure all fabrics are laid out evenly and perfectly flat. Safety pin them together.
  7. If you have a free motion presser foot, use a looped, squiggle motion to quilt over all three layers. If you don’t have this tool, you can also quilt the layers together by stitching on top of the seam lines.
  8. When you are done quilting, make sure to cut off any excess fabric hanging off the edge of the quilt and use your rotary cutter, board and ruler to square off the sides and make it a perfect rectangle.
  9. Next you will need to create the rainbow binding. Stitch all 14 of your 2" strips of solid flannels in color order along the 36" sides: red, orange, yellow, green, aqua, blue, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, aqua, blue, pink.
  10. Press the seams open (this will be important and help with the bulk when wrapping them around the quilt to bind).
  11. Turn the stripes to run horizontally on your work surface and then cut them into 2 1/2" rainbow strips. Cut as many as you can and then connect them along the short edges of the red and pink to make one long strip.
  12. You should now have one long 2 1/2" rainbow strip for the binding. Press this piece in half lengthwise.
  13. To attach the binding to your quilt, line up the raw edges of the top of your quilt with the raw edges of your folded binding piece (right sides together). Leave approx. 4" of the binding undone as you start so that when you finish stitching around the perimeter you can tuck some of the excess binding into this opening and do a final stitch over it.
  14. Fold the binding around to the back of the quilt and use your needle and thread to do an invisible stitch around the perimeter. All raw edges will now be hidden and the quilt is finished.

JOANN HACKS:

  • As you are piecing and stitching the rectangles together, make sure to press your seams flat and open. This will help to keep the quilt top even and squared off.
