SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/2 yd - 10 coordinating fabrics
  • 3 yds - White cotton
  • Pattern of choice for sundress
  • Rotary cutter and ruler
  • Matching thread
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • McCall’s pattern 7950

DIRECTIONS:

NOTE: Make 4 yds long and as close to 45" wide as possible
  1. Cut all fabric into individual strips in widths from 2" to 3 1/2" and a variety of heights from 8" to 12".
  2. Alternate each strip in the row, having a white strip between each color.
  3. Arrange the colors in a random order so the colors are evenly dispersed across the patchwork.
  4. Lay out a few rows at a time to get an even distribution of color.
  5. Sew each strip together into rows.
  6. Sew the rows together.
  7. Keep the same side of quilt as starting point and work to end to as close to 45" as possible. Using different widths will make some rows wider than others. Get as close as possible, don't overthink.
  8. After all strips have been sewn together, press and continue with selected pattern, which is McCall’s 7950 in this example.

CRAFT HACK TIPS & TRICKS:

  • When laying out strips, it might not be possible to have an even edge at end of row. This will not matter since you are cutting into this and edges won't matter.
  • Press each row before sewing on next.
  • Sew a few rows together and set aside. Make a few smaller sections and then sew the whole project together.
