SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Cotton Fabric, 1/6yd
- 1/2" Bias Tape
- Cotton Batting, 1/6yd
- Disappearing Ink Pen
- Round Elastic Cord
- Toggle Buttons, 2
- Leather, 6"x 6"
- Basic Sewing Supplies
DIRECTIONS:
- Measure around your french press from 1/2" from the handle to 1/2" to the handle, and measure the height from handle top to handle bottom. Cut out a piece of cotton batting and two pieces of cotton the same length and width. Pin the cotton onto either side of the batting and baste around the edge.
- Use a ruler and a disappearing ink pen to make vertical lines every 1" across the surface of the cozy. Sew vertical quilt lines onto the cozy using the lines as a guide.
- Add the bias tape all the way around the edge.
- Make a template for your leather pieces. Draw a 1"x 1" square and then draw a rounded triangle that looks a bit like a guitar pick inside of that square. Use the template to trace your shape onto the wrong side of the leather. Cut out your leather pieces and position each just within the top an bottom of the handle, about an 1/2" in from the edge of the cozy. Make a mark at the center of each of the leather pieces. Then set the leather pieces aside.
- Cut four 4" pieces of cord and fold them in half. String a toggle button onto two of them, place the loose ends at the leather center mark and adjust the length of the loop so that the top of the loop is centered under the handle. Sew into place at the mark and trim off the excess cord. Repeat for the remaining two pieces of cord.
- Place the leather pieces over top, the base of the rounded triangle across from the cozy edge, and sew around the leather.
JOANN HACKS:
- Start sewing your bias tape two inches from the beginning and stop sewing two inches from the end. Make a mark on both ends where the two ends meet together. Then place the ends right sides together and sew at the mark. Flip right sides out to make sure the end is sewn correctly before trimming off the excess. Then finish sewing the bias tape onto the edge of the cozy.
- If your presser foot is sticking to the leather, take a piece of scotch tape and stick is to the bottom of presser foot to help cut some of the friction.
