Beginner 3-5 Hours

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 3/4 yd fabric for mat and backing
  • 22"x 26" cotton batting
  • 1/4 yd each, 2 coordinating fabrics for pockets - or 2 Fat Quarters (Fabrics #1 & #2)
  • 1/4 yd fabric for binding
  • Disappearing fabric marker
  • Matching thread
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. For mat, cut 2 pieces 22"Wx 26"H
  2. Use a disappearing fabric marker to draw diagonal quilting lines onto top of mat 2" or 4" apart.
  3. Sandwich the batting between the top and back of mat, pin together.
  4. Quilt mat together along drawn lines.
  5. Quilting may cause the fabric to distort slightly- this is normal. Trim the edges of the mat to straighten any edges and bring the mat to a rectangle that is about 22"x 26".
  6. For pockets:
    • Fabric #1 (Black novelty print in photo) - Cut 1 each:
      • Pocket 1 Front: 8"Wx 5"H
      • Pocket 2 Back: 5"Wx 9"H
      • Pocket 3 Back: 3"Wx 9"H
      • Pocket 4 Front: 8"Wx 7"H

    • Fabric #2 (Teal novelty print in photo) - Cut 1 each:
      • Pocket 1 Back: 8"Wx 9"H,
      • Pocket 2 Front: 5"Wx 7"H
      • Pocket 4 Back: 8"Wx 9"H.
  7. Once all pocket pieces have been cut,lay the back pocket pieces out in order with the right side of the fabrics facing up. Fold the front pockets in half, match them to their back pocket and pin in place. The widths of the pockets should match.
  8. If desired, stitch front pocket to create divided pockets for smaller items.
  9. Sew each pocket set to the neighboring pockets using a 1/2" seam. When all together, the block of pockets should measure 9"Hx 22"W.
  10. Press seams open.
  11. Fold pockets in half and press.
  12. Pin pockets to bottom edge of mat. Stitch in the ditch of the seams between pockets in order to make the individual pockets.
  13. Cut 3 binding pieces 3"x WOF (width of fabric / approx. 44").
  14. Sew the binding pieces together into one long strip and fold in half, press.
  15. Sew binding to front of mat with a 1/2" seam.
  16. Turn binding to back and slip-stitch in place.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Pockets can be individualized to suit your own needs. Make pockets bigger or smaller, depending on what you want to put in them, ie. scissors, tape measurer, bobbins, ect.
  • Add up the total width of your pockets adjusted to the width of your mat and add 1" to each for a 1/2" seam allowance on each side.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Happy with end result. The instructions could have been better, also only 3 pockets instead of four are itemized for fabric # 2. I used a pencil to mark the lines for quilting the mat and it turned out fine. Also I used bias tape to go around edges.
