Quilted Tolietry Pouches

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

• For the Small Pouch:

• Cotton Fabric: 1/3 yd
• Fusible Fleece: 1/3 yd
• 12" Polyester All-Purpose Zipper
• Thread (to match)
• Scissors or Rotary Cutter & Mat
• Pins
• Chalk or Marking Pen
• Ruler or Measuring Tape
• Zipper Foot (for machine)



• For the Large Pouch:

• Cotton Fabric: 5/8 yd
• Flex Foam: 1/2 yd
• 24" Polyester All-Purpose Zipper
• Sewing Supplies (same as above)


• MEASUREMENTS:

• Small Pouch:

  7"x 3"x 4"

• Large Pouch:

  10"x 7"x 4"

DIRECTIONS:

Small Pouch:

• Cut 2 pattern pieces of cotton fabric.
• Cut 1 pattern piece of fusible fleece.
• Cut 1 piece on bias 4"x 1"; this will be the zipper pull.
• Attach the fusible fleece according to the manufacturer's instructions to one piece of the fabric; this will be the outer fabric.
• Use 1/2" seam allowance unless otherwise noted.
• Mark stitching lines on the outer fabric 3/4" apart and sew through the fabric and fusible fleece to create quilted lines on outer fabric.
• Fold 1/2" down on each straight edge of the fabric.
• With wrong sides together, lay the outer piece on top of the lining piece and baste the notched sides together from point A to point B.
• Measure the zipper and trim to fit 1" shorter than the fabric piece (folded, straight edge) making sure to stitch across zipper end to create new stop.
• Place the zipper between the outer piece and the lining and sew the zipper using a zipper foot. Stitch close to the edge of the folded edge, making sure to catch the lining fabric in seam.
• Open the zipper and pin the other side of the zipper to the other folded edge, stitch using a zipper foot.
• Turn the wrong side out and center the zipper to the bag, matching the straight edges (C).
• Stitch along the straight edges (C) and press the seam towards the bottom of the bag.
• Finish raw edges of the seam with a zig zag stitch, serger or bias tape.
• With right sides together, pin the side raw edges together matching D to E on each open edge and stitch to create box.
• Finish raw edges of the seam with a zig zag stitch, serger or bias tape.
• Turn the right sides out and finger press to make a "boxier" look to bag.
• Press the bias long edges to the center (1/2" width) then fold in half lengthwise (1/4" width finished)
• Thread through the hole in the zipper pull.
• 1/2" down from top, stitch across to secure.
• Trim bottom even to 1 1/2".

Large Pouch:

• Cut 2 rectangles 5"x 35" of cotton fabric for side and side lining.
• Cut 4 rectangles 8"x 11" of cotton fabric for top and bottom + linings.
• Cut 2 rectangles 1 1/2"x 11" of cotton fabric for zipper loop.
• Cut 1 rectangle 4"x 34" of flex foam.
• Cut 2 rectangles 7"x 10" of flex foam.
• Cut 1 rectangle 10"x 4" of cotton fabric for strap.
• Cut 1 rectangle 8 1/2"x 1 1/2" of flex foam for strap.
• Cut 1 piece on bias 4"x 1" of cotton fabric; this will be the zipper pull.


• Pin 4" x 34" piece of flex foam to one piece of 5" x 35" fabric, centering it on the fabric.
• Mark stitching lines 3/4" apart and sew through the fabric and flex foam to create lines on the outer fabric.
• Repeat with 8" x 11" rectangles, creating the top and bottom pieces.
• Take the 5" x 35" piece of fabric with foam attached and sew the short edges together to create sides of pouch.
• Using the seam as center back, mark the center front and middle of sides of the piece just sewn.
• Take one 8" x 11" piece of fabric with foam attached and mark the centers of all 4 sides; this will be the bottom.
• Pin the side loop to the bottom piece pieces together matching center marks, making sure the center back seam is attached to one of the long sides of the 8" x 11" piece.
• Sew together.
• Take the 5" x 35" piece of fabric without foam attached and sew the short edges together to create sides of lining.
• Using the seam as center back, mark the center front and middle of sides of the piece just sewn.
• Take 8" x 11" piece of fabric without foam attached and mark centers of all 4 sides; this will be the bottom lining.
• Pin pieces together matching center marks, making sure the center back seam is attached to one of the long sides of the 8"x 11" piece.
• Sew together.
• Fold over 1/2" to the wrong side on the top edge of the bag side and lining side.
• Press and place lining inside of pouch matching center back seams.
• Sew the zipper and zipper loop cotton into a loop equal to the length of the side; Turn and press short ends of fabric piece in 1/2".
• Sandwich the starting end of the zipper tape in between the folds on one side.
• Sew across close to the fold.
• Trim extra zipper tape.
• Pin ends of the zipper tape in between the other end of the cotton pieces, creating a loop.
• Adjust the placement of the end of the zipper until the loop measures the same as the sides of the bag.
• Sew across close to the folds and trim excess zipper tape.
• If cutting across the zipper coils, back stitch across the teeth close to the fold for extra security.
• Mark the center back of the zipper loop - half point of the cotton section.
• Sandwich one side of zipper tape between lining and outside top edge matching marks, wrong sides together, with the center back of the zipper loop at center back seam.
• Pin and baste zipper, using a zipper foot, to top edge of pouch created.
• After basting, remove pins and sew in place.
• On 8"x 11" piece with foam mark center front, center back and middle of sides to attach to zipper; this will become the top of the pouch.
• Open zipper and pin to 8"x 11" piece with foam, right sides together, matching marks.
• Pin remaining 8" x 11" piece of fabric, sandwiching zipper between.
• Baste zipper to top with zipper open for ease of sewing taking care to catch all layers, leave 2" opening to turn top right side out.
• After basting, remove pins and sew in place leaving opening.
• Turn right side out, press under raw edge of opening and edge stitch to close.

Strap:

• Fold in 1/2" on one long side and two shorter sides to finish edges. Press.
• Lay flex foam in center of wrong side and fold over unfinished edge to center back, fold finished edge over unfinished edge and pin.
• Sew down center of strap and 1/4" from edges of strap.
• Center strap on top of bag 2 1/2" from sides and pin.
• Sew strap to top of bag 1/4" from edge and then again 1/2" from the first stitching line to create handle on top of pouch.

Zipper Pull:

• Press bias long edges to center (1/2" width) then fold in half lengthwise (1/4" width)
• Thread through hole in zipper pull 1/2" down from top stitch across to secure.
• Trim bottom even to 1 1/2".

JOANN HACKS:

• Choose coordinating print for lining and zipper pull.
• Select contrast zipper for a pop of color.
• Sewing machine equipped with walking foot with a quilting guide is helpful for making many parallel sewing lines.
