  • 1/4yd aqua cotton
  • 1/4yd teal cotton
  • 1/4yd white cotton
  • 1yd low loft cotton batting
  • 7yds black twill tape
  • Coordinating cotton thread for fabric
  • Black cotton thread for strap
  • Cutting mat
  • Rotary cutter
  • Acrylic ruler
  • Straight pins

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Cut (4) 18"x 22" pieces from seersucker cotton for side panels. Cut (1) 12 1/2"x 14" piece from seersucker cotton for back of pocket. Cut (2) 2"x 22" strips from seersucker cotton.
  2. Cut (2) 18"x 22" pieces from cotton batting. Cut (1) 12"x 14" piece of cotton batting.
  3. Cut (6) 4"x 4" seersucker squares, four 3 1/2"x 3 1/2" seersucker squares, (1) 2"x 12 1/2" cut of seersucker so that you get short stripes to frame the bottom of the pocket.
  4. Cut (2) 4"x 4" squares of white, green, aqua, and teal cotton. Cut each 4"x 4" square in half diagonally. You'll only use 3 out of 4 triangles.
  5. Cut one 1 1/2"x 12 1/2" strip of green cotton to bind top of pocket.
  6. Arrange your triangles right sides facing in the pattern shown in the photo above. Stitch your half-square triangles together, ensuring your stripes are facing the right direction. Press seams open or to darker side, whichever you prefer and trim your ears. Each half-square triangle should measure 3.5.
  7. Stitch your half-square triangles into rows, along with your 3 1/2"x 3 1/2" squares where applicable. Then stitch your rows together to finish your quilt block. Trim it to measure 12"x 12". Stitch your 2"x 12 1/2" to the bottom of the 12"x 12" quilt block. Trim ends. Press seams open or to one side.
  8. Place your 12"x 12" cotton batting on top of your 12 1/2"x 12 1/2" seersucker cotton. Then place your 12"x 12" quilt block on top of batting with right side facing up. Pin together and baste. Quilt together using vertical matchstick quilting. Remove pins. Trim extra seersucker edges.
  9. Place long edge of green cotton strip along top of front edge of 12"x 12" block and edge stitch with about 1/4" seam allowance. Fold green strip up and press along seam. Flip your block to the back side. Fold top edge of green strip towards you about 1/4" and press. Then fold towards you again and press down. Use a ladder stitch to secure it to the back side of the pocket block. Trim ends. Set aside.
  10. To make one tote panel, sandwich a piece of 18"x 22" batting between (2) 18"x 22" pieces of seersucker. Pin and baste. Quilt together using vertical matchstick quilting. Repeat with second tote panel. Remove pins. Trim edges, making sure the two panels are even. Add binding to top of each panel using the 2"x 22" strips.
  11. Center your pocket on one of the quilted tote panels so that the bottom of the pocket is flush with the bottom of the tote panel. Pin together and stitch along each side near the raw edge.
  12. Cut your 7yds of black twill tape into four even lengths of 5 1/4'. Place two lengths of 5 1/4' tape together, matching edges, and pin. Stitch one line down the middle from one end to the other. Repeat with the other two lengths. This will create your two handles.
  13. Place one end of your first handle on the bottom of your tote so that the long edge overlaps the raw side edge of your pocket about 1/4". Pin in place. Place the other end of the strap on the opposite side of your pocket near the bottom, so that the inner edge of the strap overlaps the side of the pocket by about 1/4". Pin in place. Make sure your strap isn't twisted.
  14. Start stitching the strap to the tote panel on the inside side strap edge from one end to the top of the panel. Once you stitch off the panel, ensure you are still stitching along the inside strap edge so that you are stitching the two pieces of the strap to each other. Backstitch at the beginning and end. Repeat with the outside strap edge.
  15. Add your other strap to the second tote panel. Make sure it matches up with the straps on the first panel.
  16. Place one tote panel on top of the other with wrong sides facing so that the top edges are flush and the straps match. Pin together. Stitch along the sides and bottom with a 1/4" seam allowance. Trim corners and edges and turn right side out. Push seams and corners out and press flat. Pin and stitch along sides and edge so that the raw edge doesn't show. This is a French seam.
  17. Press bottom corners together about 1" to create a boxed bottom for the tote. Gently stitch across, adjusting for thick seam. Don't trim. Turn right side out.
  18. Press boxed corners and sides and trim loose threads.
