Quilted Zipper Pouch

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 100% Cotton fabric (A) 1 fat quarter
  • 100% Coordinating cotton fabric (B) 1 fat quarter
  • 100% Coordinating cotton fabric (C for lining) 1 fat quarter
  • Cotton batting
  • 9" zipper
  • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. You can use a rotary cutter, ruler and mat to cut your pieces, or scissors.
  2. Cut 14 - 2 1/2" squares of color A
  3. Cut 16 - 2 1/2" squares of color B
  4. Cut 2 rectangles of lining fabric 10 1/2"x 6 1/2" 
  5. Cut 2 rectangles of batting 10 1/2"x 6 1/2" 
  6. Use 1/4" seam allowances.
  7. Create a 5 square by 3 square rectangle using the 2 1/2" squares for the front and back of the pouch and press.
  8. Attach batting to both pieces and quilt as desired.
  9. Lay one lining piece right side up and place the zipper on the top edge face up.
  10. Lay front quilted piece facedown on lining, sandwiching the zipper between the two pieces. 
  11. Pin and sew zipper to top of pouch using a zipper foot. Fold fabrics right side out and topstitch fabric close to zipper.
  12. Lay piece flat and pin back piece of lining and back quilted piece to zipper, making sure that the front and back quilted pieces are right sides together, and sew using a zipper foot. Fold fabrics right side out and topstitch.
  13. Open zipper half way and pin linings right sides together, and front and back quilted pieces right sides together (If zipper is not left open, you will be unable to turn your pouch right side out).
  14. Sew around edges of pouch leaving a 3" opening on the lining to turn.
  15. Turn right side out and press.
  16. Hand stitch opening of lining closed.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Use a premade quilt block and cut to size to use as the front and back piece.
