Rainbow Fabric Lunch and Snack bags

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

    For lunch bag:
  • 1/2yd canvas fabric
  • 1/2yd cotton fabric
  • Snaps
  • 1/4yd cotton fabric
  • 1/4yd PUL fabric
  • Sew-on Velcro®
  • General sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

    For lunch bag:
  1. Cut:
  2. One 33"x 9" strip both canvas and cotton.
    Two 15"x 5" strips both canvas and cotton.
    One 3"x 9" strip of canvas for strap.
  3. Fold cotton in half and mark 14 1/2" down on long strip, repeat on the other side.
  4. Snip in 1/2" at mark.
  5. With right sides together, pin one small strip to to the larger strip as pictured, stitch.
  6. At corners pull fabric underneath toward you, leave needle down and release foot. Turn fabric while needle is still in, and push fabric underneath away and continue stitching.
  7. Repeat for canvas.
  8. With right sides together, place cotton bag inside canvas bag.
  9. Pin and stitch, leaving a 5" opening.
  10. Turn right side out and press making sure to press open edge in line with stitched edges.
  11. Top stitch close to top edge.
  12. To make strap, fold under 1/4" on all sides.
  13. Fold in half lengthwise and top stitch close to edge.
  14. Add top of snap close to one edge of strap, follow instructions on package.
  15. Mark 7" center down back of bag.
  16. Pin the strap there, the side without the snap.
  17. Top stitch 1" along previous stitching then over, creating a rectangle. Go over 2-3 times to secure.
  18. On the front, mark 9" center from top of bag; attach the other part of the snap according to direction .
  19. For sandwich bag:
  20. Cut one 7"x 17" of each PUL fabric and cotton.
  21. 5 1/2" of Velcro.
  22. For snack bags:
  23. Cut one 5"x 13" of each PUL fabric and cotton.
  24. 3 1/2" of Velcro.
  25. Cut one 7"x 10" of each PUL fabric and cotton.
  26. 5 1/2" of Velcro.
  27. Leave edges or round the top corners.
  28. Cut Velcro 5 1/2".
  29. Pull apart, place one piece of Velcro centered 1 1/2" from top on the right side (shiny side) of PUL.
  30. Place the other half 1 1/2" from bottom on the right side of cotton.
  31. With right side together, pin and stitch cotton and PUL together, leaving a 3" opening.
  32. Clip corners if necessary.
  33. Turn right side out and press; press cotton side up with medium heat.
  34. Top stitch across open edge.
  35. Attach Velcro together and fold so bottom edge reaches the top; pin bottom half and detach Velcro.
  36. With cotton side up, top stitch close to edge.
