SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 2 1/4yds fleece, patterned, for body of blanket
  • 3yds fleece, solid color, for fringe
  • Sewing machine
  • Cutting board
  • Rotary cutter
  • Tape measure
  • Fringe cut slotted ruler, optional
  • Fabric scissors, large & small
  • 2' quilter's rule
  • Fabric marker, water soluble
  • Sewing notions

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Lay patterned fleece RS up on a flat surface. Remove selvage edges. Cut short ends to square at 84" long. Measure width of fabric.
  2. Cut side fringe. Cut solid color fleece, (2) 13"x 84", (2) 13"x width of blanket panel. Mark 2" from one long edge on all. Fold over edge 1" to 2" mark. Sew 3/4" from the folded edge. Repeat. Cut down the length of each now 12" strip 4" wide, measured from the 1" folded edge. Fold the remaining 8" wide strips in half lengthwise and sew 3/4" from the folded edge. Repeat. Pin the 4" strip and the folded 8" strip together lining up the ends and the folded edges, hem side of 1" fold toward the 8" folded piece. Sew 1 1/4" from the folded edges. Repeat. When opened, the long, folded edges become a channel to enclose the raw edges of the blanket panel. Set aside.
  3. Determine locations for short fringe lines by the pattern of the blanket panel.
  4. For a random patterned blanket panel. Measure from one long side center on a diagonal to approximately 14" in from opposite long side corner. This will be the length of one strip of fringe trim.
  5. For diagonal, thin striped pattern, as in inspiration photo. Mark the half points on either long side. Choose a stripe that is close to the mark on one side, follow the stripe at a diagonal to the short end of the blanket panel. Measure from one long end corner to where the fringe line ends on the short end. Take this measurement and mark the same distance in from each long side corner along a short end.
  6. The lines of fringe will create one “X" on the top half and one “X" on the bottom half of the blanket panel. The fringe will cross in the center of the panel. Measure from side to side to ensure consistency of crossing locations of fringes. The fringe should meet at the centers of the long sides of the blanket panel.
  7. Measure the lengths of fringe needed. One leg of each “X" will be full length, the other leg will be two pieces (so fringe does not overlap). Cut 2 strips, from solid color fleece, at 1 1/2" wide for each section. Layer two strips and sew down the center. Cut 1/2" fringe strips on either side of the stitch line. Repeat.
  8. Mark 1" in from outer edges of blanket where fringe lands. Follow the first stitch line, on the fringe, to sew the short fringe to blanket panel, starting at the 1" mark. Leave the excess fringe to meet the edges of the blanket panel. These will be removed after the side fringe.
  9. Add the long side fringes first. Pin folded channel around the raw edges of the blanket panel. Pin every 1 1/2"- 2". Sew 1/2" from the folded edges. Repeat for short ends fringe, overlapping the corners over the side fringe.
  10. Trim excess length of short fringe to side fringe folded edge.
  11. Cut side fringe. Use a rotary cutter and fringe cut slotted ruler or sharp scissors to fringe as narrow as possible.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fleece Fringe Blanket Directions are confusing. Been sewing for 30+ years. It would be helpful to have photos along with instructions.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wish for Photos I was so excited to see this pattern, but I am a beginner stitcher and could have used some photos or a video to understand what you are trying to have me do. Maybe I will try the project again, but it will probably stay in the bag in the back of the closet :(

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Directions are confusing Looks to be a great project however the directions are confusing. As a medium to high level sewer, I can not follow the instructions. Consider adding pictures as a guide. This is unfortunate for a newbie to learn.
