SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Cricut Maker
- Laptop or Computer
- Cricut Chipboard
- Cricut Strong Grip Mat 12"x 12"
- Masking Tape
- Assorted Colored Wood Paint or Spray Paint
- Paint Brushes
- Tweezers
- Light Sand Paper
DIRECTIONS:
- Open Design Space and Insert your design svg and adjust to 8"x 8", highlight design and weld design.
- Insert a square shape from shapes icon and adjust square to 8 1/2"x 8 1/2".
- Place your design onto the square; be sure to highlight design and square and center horizontally and vertically.
- Highlight over both again and slice.
- This new sliced design image will be the square stencil that you will be cutting.
- Lay Chipboard on strong grip mat and tape all sides down to the mat.
- Cut with the Cricut maker; mirror the image when cutting.
- This takes approximately 4-5 hours; during this time, you can start creating the next stencil.
- Open a new Cricut design space window tab, and follow the same directions until you have 3.
- After the first one is cut out, peel up the tape and slowly peel the mat away from the chipboard.
- Using tweezers, carefully tap out pieces of the chipboard design.
- Once all pieces are out, use light sand paper to remove any layer of chipboard left behind.
- Use spray paint or wood paint in a vented room or outside, 3-4 coats; let each coat dry for 5 hours.
JOANN HACKS:
- Turn your computer screen to "never sleep" so the 5 hour cut per stencil doesn't get interrupted by your computer sleeping or shutting off.
- Mirror your stencil before cutting because the top side being cut with the Cricut maker has rollers that will indent on the chipboard; this gives the bottom side a perfect smooth surface when finished.
- When punching out the cut pieces of wood from the stencil, push them out from the back smooth side to the front side that has the roller marks (this leaves your stencil with just one smooth side and any flaws on the back).
