DIRECTIONS:

To find the downloadable patterns click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.
  1. Use foam core or cardboard to cut the shapes for your bugs' heads, thoraxes, bodies and wings. Try circles, ovals, rounded squares & different wing styles. Try adding textures to some of your stamps with plastic wrap, yarn or rubber bands. Glue each shape to a larger piece of cardboard to make stamps.
  2. Bendy straws glued to cardboard are great for legs and antenna. Pony beads and buttons make polka dots. Create interesting textures by making stamps using rice, yarn or pony beads.
  3. Add a bead to make a handle on the top of each stamp to help little hands stay clean.
  4. Tape a long piece of plastic wrap to a covered workspace, add generous dabs of acrylic paint, roll paint with the printmaking brayer to ink your stamps, and press on large sheets of paper. Mix colors. Try textured papers, overlapping, and add textured items. Try letting some prints dry and stamp a different color on top.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Experiment stamping with household objects directly. We used the tip of a clothespin to stamp tiny lines. Also, you can try the edge of a piece of cardboard or the bottom of a plastic cup.
  • Adults can use an X-Acto knife to cut more complex shapes.
  • We printed on heavier 9"x 12" watercolor paper, but most drawing/craft paper will work.
