DIRECTIONS:
  1. Mix the acrylic paint in a paper cup to the shade that you desire. Then, paint the hexagon boxes with the taupe/white paint mixture and let it dry.
  2. Use the foam core pieces to make a base inside the hexagon boxes. Think of this as a shelf; lay the box on its back with the open hexagon facing upwards. The bottom half of the hexagon will get rocks, so you'll build a background or a shelf for the rocks to sit on. They'll sit on top of the foam core instead of layers from the front to back of the hexagon; this will keep the boxes from weighing too much to hang. Secure the foam pieces in place with the Quick Grip glue. Let it dry.
  3. Smear a layer of glue onto the foam core and place the rocks and shells where you desire.
  4. Let everything dry overnight.
  5. Following the instructions on the resin box, mix a small about of the resin, (enough to cover just the rocks) and pour it into the boxes, avoiding the sides and back wall. You want to "seal" the rocks and any air pockets. Let that dry overnight. You will have to lay the boxes on their sides to fill in the front of the rocks in the boxes.
  6. Mix another batch of the resin, (enough to go on top of the previous layer and make it about 1/8" thicker. Use your heat gun to remove any air bubbles. Let it dry at least 6 hours. You will keep doing this process until you have covered and sealed the rocks.
  7. For the final coat, you will need double sided tape. Using your x-acto knife, place the double sided tape on the front edge of the boxes where you want the resin to be. Place the silicone piece against the double sided tape and place a scrap piece of Foamcore on top. Use the woodworking clamp to hold the silicone and Foamcore in place. Set the hexagon box standing upright on a working surface. Mix a medium size batch of resin. Pour the resin into the box just inside the silicone wall. Make sure your resin is completely covering the rocks. As it is settling, use the heat gun and toothpick to remove any bubbles that are coming to the top of the resin. Let it dry overnight.
  8. Remove the silicone and double sided tape. Use your x-acto knife to clean off the edges or any resin. You will probably need to paint another topcoat of paint onto the boxes to give them a finished look. Snip the succulents at the base of them and attach them inside the boxes using the Quick Grip glue. Let it dry overnight.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Make sure you watch for air bubbles coming out from under and around the rocks as you are putting down each layer.
