Finished Circumference About 20" (51 cm), will stretch to fit a range of sizes
Finished Length About 13" (33 cm)
14 sts + 20 rows = about 4" (10 cm) in K1, p2 Rib.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.
K1, p2 Rib worked in rnds (worked over a multiple of 3 sts)
Rnd 1: * K1, p2, rep from * around.
Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p2 rib worked in rnds.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased.
Hat is worked in one piece in the round, beginning on a circular needle, then changing to double pointed needles when sts have been sufficiently decreased.
When knitting in the round on double pointed needles (dpns), sts should be divided fairly evenly onto the needles. When working with a set of 5 dpn, your sts should be divided among 4 needles. The total number of sts will not always be evenly divisible by the number of dpns that you are using – this is not a problem! Simply divide your sts as evenly as possible, you will still create a symmetrical ”˜tube' of knitting.
With circular needle, cast on 69 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Work in K1, p2 rib until piece measures about 11-1/2" (29 cm) from beg.
Shape Crown (top of Hat)
Next Dec Rnd: *K1, p2tog; rep from * around – 46 sts at the end of this rnd.
Next Rnd: Working with one needle at a time, change to double pointed needles as you work this rnd, *k1, p1; rep from * around.
Next Dec Rnd: P2tog, *ssk, p2tog; rep from * around – 23 sts
Next Rnd: K2tog, *p1, k1; rep from * around – 22 sts
Next Dec Rnd: K2tog around – 11 sts
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail through remaining sts, and pull to gather. Knot securely.
Weave in ends.
