SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Denim Jacket
  • Seam Ripper
  • 3/8"x 3yd Ribbon Spool, Four Colors (2 spools per color)
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Craft Glue
  • Lighter
  • Basic Sewing Supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Use a seam ripper to open up the sleeve seams of the jacket. Remove all the broken threads.
  2. Cut sixteen 12" long pieces of each of the four colors of ribbon (64 pieces altogether.)
  3. Heat treat one end of each ribbon to prevent it from fraying. Hold the ribbon end firmly in one hand and pass a lighter slowly along the ribbon edge, not quite touching the ribbon with the flame. Practice on some of the extra pieces of ribbon first.
  4. Measure 1" from the armpit of the jacket and place your first length of ribbon so that it measures 11" from the edge of the jacket seam, leaving 1" on the interior of the jacket. Use a spot of craft glue on the jacket seam to keep the ribbon in place.
  5. Continue to line up each piece of ribbon, side by side, down the seam of the jacket; 8 lengths of each color.
  6. After the glue is dry, turn the jacket inside-out and pin the jacket seam. Make sure all of the ribbon lengths are out of your way, then sew the seam back together. Double-check that none of the ribbons were caught in your newly sewn seam, then trim off any excess ribbon on the interior of the jacket, and finish the seam with a zigzag stitch or an overlocking machine.
  7. Repeat for the other arm.
