approximately 2' wide x 2' 6" high- Refering to tree panel template, transfer measurements onto canvas. Add grommet reinforcement panel onto canvas. Cut one each.
- Fold bottom edge of grommet panel back 1/2". Sew 1/3" from edge. Set aside. This panel will be a second layer to reinforce where the grommet is. You will use this after preparing the treen panel for hemming.
- Prepare sides and top of tree panel for hemming by double folding and pressing edges back 1/2" then another 1/2". Fold bottom edge sides back 1/2". Fold bottom edge back 1/2" then another 1 1/4". This bottom hem will provide a channel for a dowel rod.
- With wrong sides together, set the grommet reinforcement panel side and top edges under the side and top hems of the tree panel. Sew close to the bottom folded edge of the grommet panel. Sew close to the folded edges around the perimeter of the tree panel, leaving one side of the bottom hem open to insert the dowel.
- Mark the location for a grommet as noted on the grommet reinforcement panel template. See manufacturer's instructions to apply a grommet to the tree panel.
- Mark horizontal lines for ribbon rows to the right sides of the tree panel as per template. Straight rows are single lengths of ribbon connected at one end onto the 5/8" wide grosgrain ribbon. Loop rows are loops of ribbon connected at the raw ends onto the 5/8" wide grosgrain ribbon. Add horizontal braids centered over the horizontal ribbons at the top of the loop rows. The photo image shows a second row of braid added directly under the first set of braids, over the attached loop rows. Sew all ribbons with a zig zag stitch centered on 5/8" wide grosgrain ribbon. See template for the overall widths of ribbon strands. The side ribbons beyond the width of the tree panel will flare out from the sides of the tree panel to add to the irregular nature of the rows of ribbon. Add 2" of length to grosgrain ribbon on either side of the vertical ribbons.
- Slightly vary the lengths of ribbon. Some variations may naturally occur when the ribbons drape due to the variety of width and thickness of ribbons. Alterations in length of the straight ribbons may be done during final trimming.
- For straight rows of ribbons, fold the top side edges of ribbons back to the center of the ribbon and pin to the horizontal ribbon. Overlap the tops of ribbons or stack closely together for an irregular texture. For the loop rows of ribbon, fold the side edges of both ends of ribbon back to the center and layer the ends. With thin ribbons, fold the ends in half and stack the raw ends. Keep the loops from twisting. Pin to the horizontal ribbon. Keep the tops close to one another for a full tree.
- Braid lengths of ribbon at least 2" wider than the horizontal length for the top edge of the loop rows. To keep the braid even, fold each strip of ribbon with wrong sides together in half lengthwise as it is being braided. With each braid, keep the folded edge towards the same end of the braid. Sew the ends of braids to secure. Cover the ends with a wrap of grosgrain ribbon (same ribbon as used at the top of all ribbon rows). Cut a strip of ribbon 2 time the width of the end of the braid. Apply a strip of Fabric Fuse tape to the wrong sides of ribbon. Place the end of the braid centered on the ribbon. Wrap the ends of ribbon around to the back of the braid, edges of ribbon flush.
- Attach the ribbon rows and braids to the tree panel. Start with the bottom, straight row. Match the top edge of ribbon with the horizontal mark on the tree panel. The vertical ribbons should extend approximately 1" past both sides of the panel. The grosgrain ribbon without vertical ribbons will extend approximately 3" past both sides of the panel. Sew over the tops of the ribbons with another zig zag stitch on top of the first. Trim away any fray at the top of the ribbons. Sew a straight stitch at the top of the horizontal ribbon to further secure the row in place. Apply Fabric Fuse tape to the open ends of grosgrain ribbon and fold back over the tops of vertical ribbons. Match the top edges of grosgrain ribbon. Flip the panel wrong side up. Place Fabric Fuse tape to the ends of grosgrain ribbon that extends beyond the sides of the tree panel. Wrap the ends at a diagonal onto the back of the tree panel. Flip the panel right side up. Cover the horizontal ribbon with another band of grosgrain ribbon. Place a 1/2" strip of tape on the wrong side of the end of grosgrain ribbon and fold over the end. Repeat at the opposite end of ribbon once the length is determined. Place a strip of tape centered on the horizontal ribbon at the top edge of all the vertical ribbons. Place the grosgrain ribbon directly over the first ribbon.
- Repeat the above process to attach the first row of loops up from the bottom edge of the panel. The second layer of grosgrain ribbon may not be necessary if adding a layer of braided ribbon.
- To attach a ribbon braid, add a strip of tape from side to side of the tree panel, on top of the area to be covered with a braid. Wrap the ends of braid around to the back of the panel and apply tape to the back of the braid to secure in place.
- Continue attaching layers to the top edge. Finish the top with one or two rows of braided ribbon.
- Trim the bottom edges of the straight rows of ribbon at a diagonal or wedge to prevent fray. Adjust the lengths to expose the variety of layers of ribbons and the horizontal braids.
- Some of the ribbons on the sides of the tree panel may flare at inappropriate angles. Apply small strips of tape behind the ribbons to ensure that the tree panel is covered by ribbons and the ribbon flare is similar side to side.
- Cut and lightly sand the ends of the dowel. Insert the dowel into the open end of the channel at the bottom of the tree panel. Hand stitch the open end closed.
FOR THE STAR:
- Cut one 4" circle out of foam board. Mark quarters of the circle, and cut a 1/2" hole in the center. Apply Quick Grip adhesive to the back of the right side of a grommet. Press grommet into the hole. This will be the back of the star. Let dry.
- Use white and gold ribbons for star.
- Fold four 1 1/2" wide ribbons into wedges for the center of the star. Fold one side back at a 45-degree angle. Fold the other side so the center meets in a point. This should create a crisp triangle. Press. Apply Fabri-Tac under folds. Lay the four triangles folded edges up onto foam board circle, matching edges with quarter marks on the circle and points with the center of the circle. Attach to circle with Fabri-Tac. Let dry. Trim edges of ribbon to foam board edge.
- Make other wedges out of a variety of widths of ribbon. Continue to add wedges of ribbon in the desired pattern. Overlap raw edges of ribbon with other wedges. If that is not possible, consider back cutting the raw edges of ribbon on the wedge and flipping the wedge so the raw edges are concealed. Apply a small amount of Fabri-Tac to secure the edges of the wedge. After a ribbon is pressed into a wedge, overlap the angled edges to form a cone with a flat side. Apply a small amount of Fabri-Tac to the overlapped edges. Secure all layered parts equidistant from the center onto the base with Fabri-Tac.
- Hang star and tree independently on the wall. Make sure that hangers are set directly above one another. Star may overlap the top edge or it may be set at a slight distance from the top of the tree.
