SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Small storage box with hinged lid, 1 1/2"x 3"x 4 1/2", 1
  • Satin, 3 3/4"x 6 1/2", 2 pieces
  • 1" foam, cut to 3/4" H x 1 1/4" W x 3 7/8" L, 2 pieces
  • Scissors
  • 8oz Varathane, Wood Stain, Dark Walnut
  • 8oz Varathane, Polyurethane, Satin
  • Medium Flat Wash paintbrush
  • Mineral spirits
  • Fine steel wool
  • Pot to clean brush
  • Rag, white
  • Hot glue gun/glue gun sticks

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Use the brush to apply one coat of stain, brush the direction of the grain. Wipe off any excess immediately. Work from the inside to the outside of the box. Let dry.
  2. Use the brush to apply 2-3 thin coats of Polyurethane. Check all sides to ensure no thick areas remain prior to letting dry. Let dry. Gently rub over all sides and edges with steel wool to soften the finish and remove any imperfections. Blow off or use a Tack Cloth to remove any small pieces of steel wool.
  3. Cut two pieces of foam. Keep one 1 1/4"x 3 7/8" side with the factory cut. This will be the top surface. The other sides will be inserted in the box so any imperfections will be covered. Dry fit the foam into the box. The foam should lay flat with the top edges of the inside of the box. They should not be so tight that the rectangle shapes are changed.
  4. Cut two pieces of satin. Lay one piece of satin WS up. Lay the factory cut side of one piece of foam centered on the satin. The long sides should wrap up and to the back of the foam and the ends will be folded and should reach around to the back. Apply one thin line of hot glue to one long side of the back. Press the satin in place. Repeat for the other long side pulling the satin tight around the foam. Fold in one corner end of satin at the front corner. Pull the raw end to the back and secure with hot glue. Repeat for all four corners. Repeat for second foam piece.
  5. Fit both covered foam pieces in the box. Tip each foam piece to insert one end at a time. Once the fit is appropriate, secure the foam parts in place with a line of hot glue on the inside bottom of the box. Press in place.

JOANN Hacks:

  • If any odd spots appear after stain is applied this may be from excess glue that was not removed when box was constructed. These spots may be eliminated by rubbing with very fine sandpaper and re-staining the area. With all sanding, rub in the direction of the grain of the wood.
