SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Sewing machine
  • Rotary cutter & board (or scissors)
  • Quilters rule
  • Sewing notions
  • Water soluble marker
  • Liquid Stitch adhesive
  • Clothespins
  • Iron
  • Tension rod
  • Fabric, print
  • Liner, lightweight muslin or cotton fabric, same as print fabric

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Valance for inside window frame, mounted with a tension rod.
  2. Measure the height and width of the window.
  3. Width of fabric: add 4" to width of opening
  4. Length of fabric to cover the top 1/4 of window opening: 3/4 of overall height + 4 1/2"
  5. Liner: 2" less in width and 1 1/2" less in length from fabric size
  6. Lay fabric WSD.
  7. On top edge, mark a line 1" down and 5" down from raw edge. Fold the fabric to the 1" mark. Fold again to the 5" mark. Press. This will be a 2" pocket for the tension rod.
  8. On the sides and bottom edges mark a line 3" in from raw edges. Double fold the fabric to the 3" mark.
  9. Open out the pressed edges.
  10. With fabric WS up, lay liner on top, 1" up from bottom edge of fabric and 1" in from either side of fabric. Refold pressed edges of bottom and sew close to the fold. Repeat for side edges. Repeat for top edge to create the pocket.
  11. Lay the fabric RS up. Leave a section of the panel flat below the pocket. Fold and pin wide pleats on one side of the panel. When pleats are in desired locations, place pins toward the outer edges of the fabric to mark the locations. Open out the fabric and measure the distance between pleats. Mark the same locations on the opposite side of the fabric. Pin pleats. Sew pleats in place from edge of fabric 1" in (over hem).
  12. Press the top loop of the pleats toward the 1" stitching. Adjust the new folds to layer down the sides of the panel. Keep the folded edges flush. Fold under the bottom edge. Place a small amount of Liquid Stitch under folds of pleats and clamp with a clothespin to secure in place until glue is dry.
  13. Adjust length of tension rod to fit in window.
  14. Slide rod through pocket and hang.
  15. Adjust folds of center drape of panel.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not detailed enough, not Roman shade I really like the way this looks, but I would call it a valence, not a shade (to me, a Roman shade is folded and opens/closes, or at least looks like it does). Nevertheless, I wanted to create this shape as a top decorative valence because of the nice way the pleats are done - not sloppy but not so perfect and equal. It gives a little bit of unstructured look like a cute whispy bun that gives you the "what? I always look like this when I roll out of bed" look. 😉 Unfortunately, I couldn't re-create this look at all and found the directions just inadequate. I need photos and details. Even though I'd say I'm very experienced sewing, I struggle with things like this where some people seem to have a natural 'eye' for making it look beautiful. I tried about 6 or 7 ways and just got uneven folds that look unprofessional and totally homemade, not in a good way, instead of balanced and organic like this image. Maybe others can do better, but I'd suggest either going with better directions (there's plenty online), or just play around until you like the look. If you're good at arranging flowers and big, pretty bows, you'll probably do fine! I have 2 fairly wide bedroom windows, plus six narrow ones (all in the living room) to cover, so I need something I can replicate consistently. I'm going to try a more simple valance only over the large windows, and just regular folding roman shades with dowels and magnets for the small ones, so I won't have to fuss with them so much to make them consistent/matching. I would still love good instructions to make this look in the future (hint, Joann's)!
