Ruffle Pillows

RUFFLE PILLOW WITH ENVELOPE BACK

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 1/2 yds fabric
  • 18" Pillow form
  • Matching thread
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

Note: Use 1/2" seam allowance
  1. From fabric, cut one 19"x 19" for front and two 19"x 14" for back.
  2. Cut 4 strips 7"x WOF for ruffles.
  3. Note: To calculate ruffles, multiply 19" (size) x 2 (fullness) x 4 sides.
  4. 19 x 2 = 36; 36 x 4 = 144"
  5. Divide 144" by the width of the fabric to determine number of strips needed.
  6. With RST, stitch sides of ruffles all together.
  7. Press seams open and press in half lengthwise.
  8. Fold ruffle into 8ths and clip or pin marks.
  9. Sew a long gathering stitch all along the edge of the ruffle.
  10. Mark centers of each side of the pillow top and match with ruffle markings; pin in place.
  11. Pull gathers to fit evenly between pins.
  12. Stitch ruffle to pillow front.
  13. Make a narrow hem on one side of each back piece.
  14. With RST, overlap back pieces and stitch all around pillow sides.
  15. Clip corners and turn RS out.
  16. Insert pillow form.

16" ROUND RUFFLE PILLOW WITH ENVELOPE BACK

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 1/2 yds fabric
  • 16" Round pillow form
  • Paper for making 16" circle pattern
  • Matching thread
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

Note: Use 1/2" seam allowance
  1. From paper, cut a 17" circle for pattern.
  2. From fabric, cut one 17"x 17" for front and two 17"x 12" for back.
  3. Cut 3 strips 7"x WOF for ruffles.
  4. Note:
  5. To calculate ruffles, multiply 16" (size) x 3.14 (circumference)
  6. 16" x 3.14 = 50 1/4"; 50 1/4" x 2 (fullness) = 100 1/2"
  7. Divide 100" by the width of the fabric to determine number of strips needed.
  8. With RST, stitch sides of ruffles all together.
  9. Press seams open and press in half lengthwise.
  10. Fold ruffle into 8ths and clip or pin marks.
  11. Sew a long gathering stitch all along edge of ruffle.
  12. Fold the pillow front into 8ths and mark each place with marker or pin.
  13. Match the pillow marks with the ruffle marks and pin together.
  14. Pull gathers to fit evenly between pins.
  15. Stitch ruffle to pillow front.
  16. Make a narrow hem on one side of each back piece.
  17. With RST, overlap back pieces and stitch all around pillow.
  18. Clip all around and turn RS out.
  19. Insert pillow form.
