DIRECTIONS:
SCALLOPED CLOTH NAPKIN:- Cut your napkins squares out of your cotton fabric - standard napkin sizes are 16", 18", or 20" square.
- Make a scallop paper template by first cutting and taping together a length of paper that matches the length of your napkin. Fold it in half widthwise, and fold it in half widthwise again.
- Line up a circular object (large mug, roll of tape, etc.) at the top center of the paper and trace the curve.
- Mark a line 1" down from the top.
- Use your circular object to create a gentle slope on either side of the center curve, meeting the 1" line on both edges.
- Cut out the curve and unfold - you will have four equally-spaced scallops.
- Use a disappearing ink pen, or another marking utensil, and trace the scallops along the edges of the napkins, and cut out.
- Next, cover the scallop edges with bias tape. This is most easily done on the ironing board with iron on hand. Pin the start of the bias tape on the top curve of a scallop, raw edge sandwiched in between the folded edges of the bias tape, raw scallop edge meeting the bias tape centerfold.
- Heat the next couple inches with the iron, stretch the bias tape around the curve, and pin. Continue heating and pinning every couple of inches. When you reach the end, cut the bias tape so that it overlaps the beginning edge 1", then fold and press the edge in 1/2"; pin in place.
- Sew about 1/8" form the interior bias tape edge, all the way around, going slowly and checking that the bias tape curves remain taut as you work your way around the napkin. (If you notice any creasing, simply smooth and pull gently taut with your fingers.)
FABRIC COVERED NAPKIN RING:
- Mark a cardboard tube 3/4" from the edge and cut out.
- Cut out a length of cotton fabric that is 2" wide. Wrap the fabric around the cardboard tube and trim so that it overlaps 1". Iron one long edge of the fabric in 1/4" and iron one short edge of the fabric in 1/2".
- Place adhesive on the outside of the cardboard tube, center it over the wrong side of the fabric, and adhere beginning with the raw edge and overlapping with the folded edge.
- Place adhesive on the inside of the cardboard tube and press raw edge in first. Add a scant bit more adhesive on the top of the raw edge, and press folded edge over top.
- Allow adhesive to dry.
