SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Scuba belt bag template
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scuba knit Fabric - 1/4 yd black, 1/4 yd pink, 1/4 yd blue
  • Black thread
  • Sewing machine with zipper foot
  • 2" wide black and white striped belting - 32" long
  • Parachute buckle for 2" strap
  • 9" All-purpose zipper
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Straight pins

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Use the template to cut out the pieces of scuba knit fabric.

  2. Cut the back piece out of black scuba knit & the front bottom piece out of blue scuba knit. Straight pin back piece to front bottom piece, right sides together, and sew along the bottom curve. Use scissors to cut out little triangles about every 1/4" along the curve, then trim seam allowance to about 1/4".

  3. You're going to add some fabric onto the ends of the zipper. Cut one 1"x 2" piece of pink scuba knit, and one 1"x 2" piece of blue scuba knit. Secure pink piece to the left side of the zipper. A short edge of the pink knit should be about 1/4" from the end of the zipper and the length of the pink scuba knit should be facing inward and lying on top of the zipper. Pin and stitch pink knit onto zipper with zipper foot. Fold outward and press down with iron on low setting. Repeat on right side of the zipper with the blue scuba knit fabric.

  4. Attach zipper, centered and face down, on the top edge of the blue front bottom piece. Pin and sew using the zipper foot. Trim scuba fabric ends of zipper to be flush with the black back piece.

  5. Cut out Zipper Cover piece: first cut out the pink and blue pieces, making sure to add the seam allowance where they meet, sew the two colors together, press the seam open with iron on low setting, and then fold in half, wrong sides together, and press with iron.

  6. This piece will hide the zipper. Open up the folded Zipper Cover piece, and place one of the raw, unfolded long sides along the zipper's unsewn edge. Make sure that the Zipper Cover piece is wrong side out, and that the Zipper Cover piece is sitting on top of the zipper, so you can't see the zipper anymore. Pin and stitch the edge of the Zipper Cover piece all the way across, using the zipper foot.

  7. Fold the Zipper Cover piece so that the two long edges meet and the right side is facing out. Press with iron.

  8. Secure the newly created flap on both sides of the zipper by pinning in place, and using zipper foot to topstitch a perpendicular line down 1/4" from each zipper end.

  9. Cut out the Front Top piece: first cut out the black and blue pieces, making sure to add the seam allowance where they meet. Sew the two colors together, and press the seam open with iron on low setting.

  10. With right sides together, line up the bottom edge of the Front Top piece with the top of the Zipper Cover piece. Pin in place and sew together. Flip out the Front Top piece so that the right side is now facing out. Topstitch the bottom of the Front Top piece, about 1/4" up from the seam.

  11. Flip the whole bag inside out (right sides together, wrong sides facing out) and pin all the front sides to be in line with the black Back Piece, and sew both sides. Turn right side out to make sure that everything looks correct. Flip back inside out and use the scissors to clip little triangles into the curves and trim all seam allowances down to 1/4".

  12. Open the zipper before sewing the Front Top piece to the Back Piece - otherwise you will not be able to turn it right side out easily. With zipper open, bag turned inside out so that right sides are together, secure top edge of Front Top piece to top edge of Back Piece and stitch together.

  13. The body of the bag is done and all that's left is to attach the strap.

  14. With bag inside out, and zipper open, place the belting inside of the bag. Take one end of the belting and put it through the left side opening.

  15. When you step back to look at it, the bag is inside out, the belting is inside of the bag, about 1/4" of the belting end is sticking out through the opening, and the raw edge of the black and blue scuba knit opening is facing outward.

  16. Pin the opening and sew.

  17. Flip the bag right side out, and topstitch the opening.

  18. Repeat all steps for the right side opening.

  19. Once the belting is secured to the bag, find the center of the belting by folding it in half, crease it, and cut it.

  20. Finally, attach the Parachute Buckle following the manufacturer's instructions.
