SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

DIRECTIONS:

Baby Fabric Bins:

  1. Large Fabric Bin (small size measurements in parentheses)
  2. Cut 2 pieces of foam 22"x 13" (19"x 10").
  3. Cut 2 pieces of fabric 23"x 20" (20"x 15") for outside of bin.
  4. Sew right sides together along sides and bottom using 1/2" seam allowances.
  5. To create bottom, pinch the bottom seam and side seam together making a triangle to form bottom of bin.
  6. Draw a line across the bottom of the triangle with a width of 9" (7") across .
  7. Sew along this line and repeat on the other side, trim off triangle corners.
  8. Attach foam interfacing to wrong side of fabric 1" down from top.
  9. Cut 2 pieces of coordinating fabric 23"x 20" (20"x 15") for lining.
  10. Sew right sides together along sides and bottom, leaving open a 3-4" opening on the bottom to turn, using 1/2" seam allowances.
  11. To create bottom, pinch the bottom seam and side seam together making a triangle to form bottom of bin.
  12. Draw a line across the bottom of the triangle with a width of 9" (7") across .
  13. Sew along this line and repeat on the other side, trim off triangle corners.
  14. With right sides together place outer bin inside lining and sew along upper edge of bin close to foam interfacing, trim seam allowances to 1/2".
  15. Turn right side out through opening in bottom of lining.
  16. Press to attach lining to foam interfacing.
  17. Cut 1 piece of foam interfacing to fit into bottom of bin 10"x 13" (9"x 12") and place into bottom of bin through the opening in the lining, pressing to attach.
  18. For handles: Measure down 1 1/2" from top on each side and create a rectangle opening 4"x 2 1/2" (3"x 2"), finish by sewing a bias strip of fabric around edge of opening.

Whole Cloth Quilt:

  1. Cut 1 piece of fabric 42"x 42" for front of quilt.
  2. Cut 1 piece of coordinating fabric 42"x 42" for back of quilt.
  3. Cut 1 piece of cotton batting 42"x 42".
  4. Make bias strip for binding using 2 1/2" strips.
  5. Place batting between front and back of quilt fabrics (with wrong sides facing the batting) pinning to hold all three pieces together.
  6. Quilt and bind as desired.

Baby Quilt:

  1. Choose coordinating fabrics in prints and solids for blocks.
  2. Cut strips of fabric 2 1/2"x 42" (or width of fabric).
  3. Mix fabrics to make blocks and sew 3 strips right sides together using 1/4" seam allowances to create 6 1/2"x 42" strips.
  4. Cut each strip into 6 1/2" blocks. (You will need 108 blocks total for a 36"x 36" quilt.)
  5. Lay out blocks to create quilt that is visually appealing.
  6. Sew blocks together using 1/4" seam allowances.
  7. Cut 1 piece of coordinating fabric for backing 36"x 36".
  8. Cut 1 piece of batting 36"x 36".
  9. Make bias strip for binding using 2 1/2" strips.
  10. Place batting between front and back of quilt fabrics (with wrong sides facing the batting) pinning to hold all three layers together.
  11. Quilt and bind as desired.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Take a picture after laying out blocks to help with positioning before sewing.
  • Cut backing and batting larger before laying together, then trim to fit front of quilt.
