DIRECTIONS:
NOTE: Project image View B coat is made from Sherpa with flannel trim. Flannel belt has faux leather binding. Coat is quilted without batting, using lining fabric as the backing. (Flannel may be used as the backing if additional warmth is desired.) In the Chanel style, top stitching on the coat has been eliminated.- CUTTING:
- Follow View B instructions. Belt trim pattern does not need to be cut on the bias since there are no curves to bind.
- CUTTING FAUX FUR:
- Cut Sherpa with the nap of fur running down (feels smooth). Pin pattern piece right side up on wrong side of Sherpa, flip pattern wrong side up to cut second piece or to complete a piece designed to be cut on the fold. Cut in the direction of the nap.
- FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR VIEW B WITH THE FOLLOWING EXCEPTIONS:
- QUILTING: Hand baste lining or flannel to back of sherpa. Mark quilting lines on backing. Use a walking foot, raise foot pressure and use a 4.0 stitch length to sew along marked lines. After quilting, serge around pieces or trim extra fur and zigzag edges. Remove hand basting.
- WELT POCKETS: Mark placement circles on backing fabric. Slip stitch sides of welt instead of machine stitching.
- SEWING DARTS ON SHERPA: Stitch down center of dart before sewing. After sewing, slit fold 11/2" from top and spread edges open to eliminate bulk.
- FACINGS: Do not top stitch facings, they have already been slip stitched in place.
- BELT: Baste belt wrong sides together, scant 1/4" from edge. Mark cutting lines on the back of the faux leather before sewing short edges together. Do not press faux leather! To accommodate the thickness of the microsuede binding, use a 1/4" seam and stop 1/4" from end to turn corners. Final stitching of trim should not be seen on flannel.
JOANN HACKS:
- Cut and sew down the nap of faux fur for best results.
- Press long fibers away from seams as you sew.
- Use a walking foot on faux fur and faux leather.
- A Teflon foot is also helpful on faux leather.
- Use Clover Clips instead of pins.
