DIRECTIONS:

  1. CUTTING
    • Start with your canvas fabric, give it a quick iron to make sure it's as flat as possible.
    • Set your OLFA Rotary Circle Cutter to the 3 /4" mark by loosening the pivot point slide and setting in place then cut your circle. This will give you a circle with a 7 1/2" diameter. Set the circle aside.
    • With the remaining canvas on the table, use your rotary cutter to cut a rectangle that is 23 1/2" wide by 10" deep.
    • To make the front of the basket curved, fold the rectangle in half, then measure up 6" from the bottom on the folded side, and put a pin in it to mark where you'll cut the curve.
    • Carefully use your rotary cutter to cut a sloping curve from the fold line up to the cut edges.
    • Cut a small 5" long by 3" wide. Fold the fabric so the cut edges meet in the middle, give it a press, then set aside.
    • Lay out your sherpa faux fur fabric on your cutting surface and lay the canvas rectangle with the slope out on it. You'll use this piece as a template to make sure the fleece and canvas are the exact same size. Use your ruler to cut the bottom and sides straight, then follow the curve of the canvas.
    • While your sherpa faux fur is on the cutting surface, get out your OLFA Rotary Circle Cutter and cut a circle from it. Make sure the settings are the exact same.

  2. SEWING
    • Take your canvas rectangle and sew the sides together, RST, creating a tube. Press the seam open.
    • Place the tube on your circle, RST, lining up the edges. Use pins or clips to secure the tube edges to the circle edges so you can sew them together. Be sure to adjust the tube where need be. They should line up almost perfectly.
    • Place the attached pieces, circle side down, on your sewing machine, and start stitching about 1" before the back seam. Sew all the way around the circle.
    • Next, take the small rectangle you cut and pressed earlier and stitch a seam down both sides. Fold it in half and pin it to the top back seam of the canvas basket, with the loop facing down.
    • Repeat the same steps for sewing the sherpa faux fur, except leave 3" opening in the back seam so you can turn out the fabric basket.
    • Flip your canvas basket so the right side is out.
    • Place it inside your sherpa faux fur basket, so the right sides are together. Line up the back seams, make sure the tab is laying flat, and pin or clip along the cut edges.
    • Sew along the top edges with a 1/4" seam.
    • Turn the fabric basket out through the open seam you left earlier.
    • Hand sew or machine sew the seam closed.
    • Tie a piece of leather lace, or any other piece of cord through the tab at the back of the basket and knot it.
    • Use your basket on a tabletop, shelf, or hang from a hook for a useful, unique, and handmade storage solution.

JOANN HACKS:

  • You can make this style of basket in a larger or smaller custom size with the OLFA Rotary Circle Cutter. Calculate the circumference of your circle by multiplying the diameter by Pi (3.14) to get the length measurement of the rectangle you need! Keep in mind that the OLFA Rotary Circle Cutter can make circles from 1 1/2" to an 8 3/4" diameter.
