SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • McCall’s 7835
  • Add 3/8 yardage to fabric stated on pattern envelope for added flounce ruffle
  • Kraft paper, pencil
  • Disappearing dressmaker’s ink
  • Sewing notions

DIRECTIONS: Seams are 5/8" unless noted. Follow pattern and instructions to complete dress.

  1. Measure from the center front (where the strap flounce ruffles meet at the center front), over the bust to the princess line, then down the front princess line to the bottom ruffle. Measure the length needed and mark placement line with disappearing dressmaker’s pen.

  2. Flounce Ruffle: Make circle by folding of Kraft paper into quarters. Mark and draw from the point down 3" from fold line and cut out inner circle. The outside flounce can measure 5" wide. For a more dramatic flounce add another 1". Measure the inner circle to get how many circles to cut. The inner circle flounce ruffle should measure length of placement line. Ex: if you need 3 circles needed for the length measurement, cut 6. This would be for the under flounce. Sew circles together to equal the amount needed to sew down the bust over to the princess line to larger ruffle at the bottom of dress.

  3. With right sides together, sew flounce ruffle together on all 4 seams leaving an opening in the inside circle for turning with a 1/4" seam allowance. Turn and press.

  4. Starting at the center front, pin the flounce ruffle following the placement lines ending at the large ruffle. Baste if needed. Sew the flounce ruffle to the dress sewing on the finished inner circle edge closing the opening as sewing.

JOANN HACKS:

Flounces can be made as wider or smaller by adding or subtracting from the outer edge or added dimension by changing one side of flounce ruffle.
