SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Pre-Smocked Fabrics: 2-2 1/2 yds (for width, take bust measurement plus hip measurement, minus 6")
  • Sewing Machine
  • Basic Sewing Supplies

DIRECTIONS:

For the Top:

  1. Begin by cutting a pre-smocked section to make the top.
  2. The width should be 3" less than your bust measurement.
  3. The length will be 1" longer than the last row of smocking.
  4. Hem the bottom edge by turning in 1/2" twice and ironing.
  5. Pin in place and sew across the folded edge.
  6. With right sides together, match the raw side edges and pin.
  7. Sew 1/2" from the edge.
  8. Try on and make tighter if needed; finish raw edge with a zig zag stitch or with an overlocking machine.

For the Skirt:

  1. Cut off the top of the remaining pre-smocked fabric, an inch above your preferred length of smocking at the top of the skirt.
  2. Cut the width to be 3" less than your hip measurement.
  3. Hem the top edge by turning in 1/2" twice and ironing.
  4. Pin in place and sew across the folded edge.
  5. Measure the desired length of your skirt and cut the bottom of the skirt 1" longer than that length.
  6. Hem the bottom edge by turning in 1/2" twice and ironing.
  7. Pin in place and sew across the folded edge.
  8. With right sides together, match the raw side edges and pin.
  9. Sew 1/2" from the edge.
  10. Try on and make tighter if needed; finish the raw edge with a zig zag stitch or with an overlocking machine.
