- Black Ball-Head Sewing Pins (8)
DIRECTIONS:
- Cut the spider web shape out of the fabric.
- Cut out the curve at the top center of the spider web; this will be the neckline of the cape.
- Divide black ribbon in half, use super glue to attach ribbon to either side of the neckline and allow to dry.
- Treat ribbon ends with Fray Check and allow to dry.
- With your awl or safety pin, poke a hole through an end point on the long, straight edges of the web. Divide black cord elastic in two and lace each through a hole. Knot each elastic into a circle the size of your wrists and trim excess cord.
- Cut an 8" x 8" square out of the black panne fabric. Place a ball of Poly-fil in the center.
- Loosely hand sew the waxed button thread or embroidery floss around the perimeter of the fabric in a circle shape; pull thread tightly together at the end, gathering the fabric up into a ball around the Poly-fil. Tie in a knot. Trim off excess fabric from around the gathered center, tuck remaining fabric ends into the gathered center and set aside.
- Repeat the process for a smaller 4" x 4" square of black panne fabric and a smaller ball of Poly-fil.
- Super glue the small ball (the head of the spider) to the large ball (the body of the spider) and set aside.
- Cut wire into eight 8" lengths.
- Cut blank panne fabric into eight 8" long triangles with bases about 1 1/2" wide.
- Cut twenty-four 1/4" wide strips of black panne, about 4" long.
- Assemble the spider legs by placing one length of wire on the wrong side of one black triangle, letting 1" of the wire extend past the base of the triangle, leaving 1" of fabric at the point of the triangle.
- Dab fabric glue onto the point of the fabric triangle and fold over the wire. Dab fabric glue onto the center of the folded fabric and fold a side edge in over top the first fold. Use a sewing clip to hold in place as it dries.
- Place a small amount of Poly-fil at the wide, top part of the triangle, a smaller amount at the middle, and none at the bottom.
- Continue the side-edge fold over the Poly-fil and wire of the rest of the leg; place a line of fabric glue on the edge and fold the remaining edge over top; secure with sewing clips while the fabric glue dries. Set aside.
- Repeat the process for the remaining seven legs.
- When legs are dry, use the 1/4" strips of black panne to segment the legs into three parts. Knot a strip around the top of the leg, a strip about 2" down, and a strip another 3" down. Trim excess fabric off of the knots and repeat for the remaining seven legs.
- Cut four small holes into each side of the spider with sharp scissors, insert the wire end of a leg into each hole and secure each in place with super glue around the top knot. Push spider body against the leg top as the super glue dries and repeat for all legs.
- Position the spider onto the black headband and hold in place with a sewing clip. Dab super glue onto the headband and hold spider in place as the glue dries.
- Bend the wire legs into shape at each knot of fabric.
- Finally, finish the spider off with eyes by pushing black ball-head sewing pins into the head of the spider.
JOANN HACKS:
- If you're having any trouble pushing the cord elastic through the small holes at cape tips, give an end a fresh snip and the newly cut elastic should push through the hole easily.
- You can substitute shredded fabric scraps for the Poly-fil centers of the spider headband.
