SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 4yds Happy Value cotton - white
  • 1 bottle each Rit® dye - teal, forest green
  • Cardstock - gray
  • 2 sheets cardstock - teal
  • Cardstock - orange glitter
  • 2 sheets Foamies - teal
  • 4" Styrofoam circle
  • 6" Styrofoam circle
  • 1" fabric-covered headband
  • Acrylic paint - teal
  • Medium paintbrush
  • Gold Washi tape
  • 2 paper plates with a swirl pattern
  • Papertowel tube
  • Hot glue gun/glue gun sticks
  • X-Acto® knife
  • Metal ruler
  • Scissors/pinking shears

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Dress Fabric:
    • Dye the fabric according to the directions on the container. Mix about half of each color to get the desired color.
    • To minimize raveling, tear the ends along the grain or cut with pinking shears.
    • Once fabric is rinsed and dried, it can be draped around the body over clothing and secured with pins and/or a belt. If needed, trim excess yardage.

  2. Torch:
    • Wrap paper towel tube with teal cardstock and glue the seam.
    • Glue the 4" Styrofoam circle on top of the 6" Styrofoam circle and let dry.
    • Paint the Styrofoam piece with teal paint and set aside to dry.
    • Cut two 3"x 12" pieces of cardstock. Glue them with short ends together. With scissors make a scalloped edge on one of the long sides. Wrap the scalloped piece around the top third of the Styrofoam base and glue in place.
    • Wrap a band of gold Washi tape around the scalloped paper for a detailed finish.
    • Glue the covered paper towel tube to the bottom of the base and allow to dry.
    • Cut a flame out of the glitter orange cardstock. Use it as a pattern and cut another one with wrong sides together. To make a base for the flame, score across the bottom of the flame pieces with the X-Acto knife and metal ruler, about 1/2" from the bottom. Fold the scored area of the bottoms outward.
    • Glue the two pieces together above the flaps. Leave the flaps loose to glue to the base.
    • Glue the flame to the center of the torch top.
    • Use the leftover teal cardstock and cut a collar for the torch to transition from the tube to the top.
    • Optional: Make 3 slits in the bottom of the torch tube and pinch them towards the center to taper the bottom of the torch and glue them together.

  3. Head Piece:
    • Glue the two plates together and let dry.
    • From the bottom edge cut into the middle of the plate, then cut out the center.
    • At the bottom of the plate cut away about 4" of the rim.
    • Cut up the inside edges of the plate on both sides to look like a horseshoe. Fit it on the wearer's head and trim as needed.
    • Paint the plate with the teal paint and allow to dry.
    • Cut 8 rectangles, 3/4"x 2", from the gray cardstock for the windows in the crown. Glue these on the front of the crown, evenly spaced apart.
    • Cut 7 long skinny triangles (1/2" x 6") out of the teal foamie using the X-Acto knife and metal ruler.
    • Attach the paper plate part to the headband but only at the center base, allowing the headband to stretch without ripping the plate part.
    • Attach the skinny points at the top of the crown to the base, placing one of the points in the top center and then 3 evenly spaced out on each side.
