SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/2yd Fabric A (pencil color)
  • Less than 1/4yd Fabric B (wood)
  • Polyfil
  • Attached pattern pieces
  • Rotary cutter and ruler
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread
  • Pins
  • Iron

DIRECTIONS: (use a 1/4" seam allowance throughout the project)

  1. Using Fabric A, cut out the body piece of the pencil 15"x 15"
  2. Cut out the remaining pieces for the colored pencil using the attached patterns.
  3. Fold the right sides together of the 15"x 15" piece and straight stitch down the side to create the tube of the pencil. Leave a 4-5" opening somewhere down the body (to later add in the polyfil). Press seams.
  4. Sew your pencil tip piece and wood pieces with the right sides together. Remember to pin first and take your time since you will be sewing in a curve. Press seams.
  5. Now to create the actual cone shape of the top, fold this piece with the right sides together and sew along the side edge. Press seams when finished. The top is now complete.
  6. To connect the top with the body piece, pin the edge of the circular cone inside the tube (right sides together) and sew around the edge. Once again taking your time to make sure the fabric is not bunching.
  7. Pin the bottom circular piece (right sides together) to the tube and sew around the edges.
  8. Flip the pencil right side out and stuff with polyfil (through the 4-5" opening you created earlier). Make sure it’s nice and full.
  9. Hand sew the opening using an invisible stitch.

JOANN HACKS:

  • When you sew the top piece to the tube, it helps to line up the seams and mark that with your first pin. It’s really important to pin the remainder of the circle (and pin when you sew on the bottom) so that you can keep the fabric spread out and avoid bunching. It helps to go slow when sewing around these curves and consistently making sure the fabric is laying flat and edges are lined up.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Measurements don’t add up Bad measurements. You will have to enlarge the pattern pieces to the size that is stated on the pattern pieces. They do not print out true to size. Also, there is no seam allowance mentioned when stitching the 15x15 piece. Make sure you have use a 5/8 seam not 1/4”. If you do all of the above it should turn out okay. I did waste fabric and time figuring all this out.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad measurements The pattern pieces did not print out the correct size. Do I enlarged them to what the measurements were supposed to be as written on the pattern pieces. They still did not fit properly when trying to sew this piece together. I’m wasting a lot of time. Big disappointment.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Templates do not match the measurements on them It's a cute idea but the templates do not measure to the sizes given even when printed at 100%. I enlarged it to 110% and it was still smaller. I couldn't go any larger because it would print off the paper. It also would be helpful if the overall finished dimensions were given on the pattern. i i
