Tapestry Crochet Backpack

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • K+C Essential 100% Cotton Yarn, Cream (Color A)
  • K+C Essential 100% Cotton Yarn, Denim (Color B)
  • K+C Essential 100% Cotton Yarn, Lilac (Color C)
  • Size U.S. G/6 (4.0mm) Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle

DIRECTIONS:

NOTE: Pattern is is made by creating a long panel, then sewing up the sides to create the bag.
NOTE: With tapestry crochet, the nonworking color will be carried under the working color stitches.
With color A, Ch 57.
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch to end of row. (56 sts).
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st and each st to end of row.
Row 3-9: Repeat row 2.
Switch color B.
Row 10-15: With B, ch 1, sc in first st and next 7 sts, *switch to A, sc in next 8 sts, switch to B, sc in next 8 sts, repeat from * to end of row.
Tie off B.
Rows 16-21: With A, ch 1, sc in first st and next 7 sts, *switch to C, sc in next 8 sts, switch to A, sc in next 8 sts, repeat from * to end of row.
Tie off C.
Repeat rows 10-21 until there are 19 color block changes.
With A, repeat row 2 for another 9 rows.
Tie off with a long tail for sewing.
Fold the last 9 rows to the back of the piece, 1". Stitch the last row to the first row of the all color A section to create a channel for the drawstring.
Repeat for the other end.
Fold the whole piece with right sides facing. Stitch up both sides, leaving the channels unstitched.
Weave in ends.
To make the straps, hold two strands of A yarn together, chain 201. Tie off.
Repeat for other strap.
Lay the piece flat. Pull one of the drawstrings through the top channel, from right to left of the bag (do not pull all the way through). Pull the same drawstring through the back channel from left to right. Pull so that the ends of the drawstring are even.
Pull the next drawstring through the top channel left to right of the bag (do not pull all the way through). Pull the same drawstring through the back channel from right to left. Pull so that the ends of the drawstring are even.
Knot the ends of each drawstring to the bottom corners of the bag. Pull to cinch closed.
