SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Home Decor Fabric
  • Yarn
  • Sewing Machine
  • Sewing Notions
  • Rotary Cutter & Cutting Board
  • Quilters' Rule
  • Tape Measure
  • Marking Pen
  • Fabric Clips
  • Thick Cardboard, 2"x Length of Tassel + 1/2"
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Crochet Hook (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Determine the amount of fabric for the curtain panels (with a 2-2 1/2" channel for the rod).
  2. Measure the height from the top of the curtain rod to 1/4"-1/2" from the floor. Add 9 1/2" to the height for the cut length of fabric.
  3. Measure the full width of the window and casing and use as the width of each of the two curtain panels. For lighter weight fabric, additional width may be added to increase the fullness of the curtains.
  4. Cut out the curtain panels.
  5. Determine the size and number of tassels to line both sides of each curtain panel.
  6. For the 84" curtains pictured, ten 3" tassels were added to each side at 9" intervals. The top tassels were set 5" down from the top raw edge and the bottom tassels were set 6 1/2" up from the bottom raw edge.
  7. Prepare to make the tassels.
  8. Cut the cardboard 2"x the length of the tassel + 1/2".
  9. Wind yarn on the cardboard. Keep the wraps loose. Wrap as many times around the cardboard as necessary to achieve the desired thickness of the tassel. Start and stop wraps at the same edge of the cardboard (bottom).
  10. Cut the wraps at the bottom edge of cardboard.
  11. Cut a 6"-8" length of yarn for the tassel hanger.
  12. Double knot the hanger centered under the top of the tassel fringe.
  13. Add a yarn wrap below the tassel hanger.
  14. Cut a 10" length of yarn. Double knot the length centered below the hanger, around the fringe of the tassel. This will create a head on the tassel. Wrap the tails a few times around the knot. Thread the tail ends through a needle and tuck down inside the center of the fringe.
  15. Trim the fringe of the tassels to an even length.
  16. Prepare to add the tassels to the curtains.
  17. Fold back the side edges of the curtain panels 1/2" and stitch to keep in place. Fold a second 1/2". If the fabric can keep a crisp fold when pressed, double fold the sides, 1/2" then another 1/2" and press. On the wrong side of the curtain panels, mark the locations for the tassels.
  18. Attach the tassels.
  19. Tuck the tails of the hangers for the tassels behind the second fold of the side hems. Keep the top of the head of the tassels in line with the outer edge of the curtain panels. Sew close to the inner fold of the hem keeping the tails of the tassels buried inside the hem. Hand stitch or use a zipper foot to further attach the tassels closer to the outer edges of the curtain panels. This will ensure that the tassels will be completely visible when the curtains are hung.
  20. Sew the bottom hem.
  21. Fold the bottom edge back 1" and stitch to secure. Fold the bottom edge 2 1/2" and stitch close to the top fold.
  22. Sew the top hem and channel.
  23. Fold the top edge back 1" and stitch to secure. Fold the top edge back 4" and stitch close to the bottom fold. Add another line of stitching 1" down from the top folded edge. This will create a channel for the curtain rod.
