SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 8"x 10" gesso block
  • 10"x 14" clear palette
  • 3" trowel palette knife
  • 8oz Liquitex modeling paste
  • 2oz FolkArt matte acrylic paint: fresh cut grass
  • 15 pc. value pack artist's brushes
  • .94" masking tape
  • 3/4" blue painters tape
  • 150 grit sandpaper
  • disposable towels/paper towels

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Lay the block on a flat surface. Lay the brushes next to one another beside the block with the ends of the handles touching the block. This will ensure that all the handle ends will be flush with one another and will make contact with the block when dragged through the modeling paste. Vary the number of brushes in groups. Lay masking tape over the handles of the brushes. Lift group of brushes and wrap tape around to the other side of handles.
  2. Apply painters tape around the sides of the block. Start around the top edge keeping one edge of the tape flush with the top surface of the block. Add a second line of tape to completely cover the sides of the block.
  3. Use the palette knife to lay approximately 3oz of modeling paste onto palette. Add green paint to paste and mix with the knife.
  4. Apply modeling paste to block. Smooth out paste to approximately 1/8" thick using palette knife. There will be marks left from knife.
  5. Use the ends of the paint brush handles to scrape geometric designs into the paste. Remove the tape from the sides of the block.
  6. Use paper towels to remove excess paste from knife and palette. Modeling paste will dry hard. This should not be put down drains. Wash remaining residue in warm water.
  7. Let dry overnight.
  8. Use sandpaper to remove any rough edges.
