SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 pair of tennis shoes
  • Tie dye kit
  • Small paintbrush
  • Small glass container or coffee mug
  • Work surface covered with a trash bag

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Mix each bottle of tie dye with the hottest water possible.
  2. Shake the bottles to mix the dye and then let them sit.
  3. Remove shoelaces and packing material from tennis shoes.
  4. Take the tennis shoes and lightly run them under water to wet the canvas.
  5. Place the tennis shoes on the plastic working surface.
  6. Squirt a small amount of the dye into the glass container.
  7. Paint the dye onto the shoes with the small paintbrush in random areas.
  8. For larger areas, use the dye straight from the bottles onto the shoes.
  9. Do this for each color you are using on the shoes.
  10. Let the shoes dry before inserting the shoestrings again.

JOANN HACKS:

  • If you put on too much dye, rinse the shoe under hot water to dilute the color or you can also use bleach with the paintbrush and paint out some of the color. Make sure after using the bleach you wash the shoe thoroughly to remove it.
