Before starting to work with lace fabric, wash it gently in soapy water, rinse and air dry. If the lace has lost much of its stiffness, use spray starch on it and press with iron set for temperature appropriate for fiber content of the lace fabric. A press cloth over the lace fabric is advised.
When laying out the fabric to cut check to see if it has obvious right and wrong sides. If it does have a right side, mark that side lightly with water erasable marker on the area where the pattern pieces will be pinned.
There may not be a grain line in the fabric to keep in mind when laying out pattern pieces but it is important to pay attention to the design of the lace and place the pattern pieces to take advantage of the design.
If you can fold the lace fabric to cut out both right and left sides of the garment at the same time as you would using a woven fabric then do so. Often the lace fabric will shift, making it difficult to keep the pieces lined up. In that case cut out the pattern on one layer for one side, then flip the pattern over to make the other side.
When sewing with lace, use a zig zag stitch to ensure that the lace is being secured to its adjoined fabric with every stitch.
