Choose Halloween icon color. Use this color as the base layer of paint. Paint entire pumpkin body in base color.
Cut icon shapes out of paper using scissors or craft knife.
When paint has dried, trace paper icon pattern onto pumpkin with pencil. Painting outside the traced line, outline each shape with top coat color. When all shapes are outlined, fill in remaining area outside of icons using a larger paintbrush.
Stencils can also be created from the patterns. If using a stenciling technique, paint entire pumpkin body in top coat color. Use base coat color to fill in stencil. Use a stenciling sponge or foam brush to fill in stencil.
Using dark, medium, and light brown paint, paint stems. Paint entire stem with medium brown. Add lowlights with the dark brown in the folds of the pumpkin stem. Add highlights along the top edges of the pumpkin stem.
JOANN HACKS:
Using a darker color over a lighter color is easier to touch up if mistakes are made. Keep a damp rag handy at all times for touch-ups.
