CANVASES
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Patterned and solid cotton fabric
- Tape measure
- Staple gun or stapler (staple gun works best)
- Three 16"x 20"x .5" canvases
DIRECTIONS:
-
Canvas 1
- Cut out 4 pieces of cotton fabric:
- Main pattern = 19"x 12.5" (pattern runs horizontal).
- Blank solid for lettering = 12"x 12.5"
- Accent pattern 1 = 9"x 6"
- Accent pattern 2 = 9"x 8.5"
- Layout fabric in arrangement shown.
- Stitch together accent pattern rectangles 1 & 2, right sides together, allowing 1" seam along bottom of accent 1 fabric (top of accent 2 fabric). Open fabric so right sides face out. Stitch together blank solid fabric and accent fabrics, right sides together, along right edge of blank solid (left edge of accents), allowing 1" seam. Open fabric so right sides are out. Stitch together main pattern fabric and the blank solid/accent piece together, right sides facing each other, allowing 1" seam. Open fabric so right sides face out.
- Iron pieced fabric. Do not open seams, iron flat.
- Place fabric as desired on canvas. Flip fabric and canvas over. Using staple gun or unhinged stapler (staple gun recommended), staple fabric to wood canvas frame in the center of the top wood beam. Next staple fabric to center bottom beam, pulling fabric taut. Staple to center right beam, then left, pulling fabric taut each time. Staple each beam a total of three times, evenly spaced, working from opposite beam to opposite beam, pulling fabric taut each time.
- Secure corners by folding fabric corners as if wrapping a gift. Pull corners taut and staple ends of fabric to wood frame.
- Using tracing paper, sketch in approximate size and shape of selected quote typography. Prepare Cricut® file to execute lettering. Apply words to canvases.
-
Canvas 2
- Cut out 3 pieces of cotton fabric:
- Main pattern = 11"x 19" (pattern runs horizontal).
- Blank solid for lettering = 14"x 12"
- Accent pattern 1 = 14"x 9"
- Layout fabric in arrangement shown.
- Stitch together fabric pieces using same process as Canvas 1. Stitch pieces together, right sides facing, allowing 1" seams. Open fabric and repeat on remaining piece.
- Iron pieced fabric. Do not open seams, iron flat.
- Using staple gun, attach fabric to canvas using the same process as Canvas 1, starting with the centers of opposite beams and working your way around the canvas, pulling fabric taut each time.
- Sketch approximate size and overall shape of quote on tracing paper before preparing Cricut® file and executing lettering.
-
Canvas 3
- Cut out 2 pieces of cotton fabric:
- Main pattern = 19"x 10.5" (pattern runs horizontal).
- Blank solid for lettering = 19"x 14.5"
- Layout fabric in arrangement shown.
- Stitch together fabric pieces using same process as Canvas 1. Stitch pieces together, right sides facing allowing 1" seams.
