SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1 3/4 yd dark cotton fabric (or thirteen 4 1/2"x WOF strips of various dark solids and prints)
  • 1 3/4 yd medium cotton fabric (or thirteen 4 1/2"x WOF strips of various medium solids and prints)
  • 2 1/8 yd light cotton fabric (or sixteen 4 3/4"x WOF strips of various light solids and prints)
  • 5/8 yd for binding
  • 4 yd for backing
  • Twin size batt
  • Template plastic or Wrights Colored Template Shapes Diamond 60 Degree
  • Rotary cutter, ruler and mat
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Iron and pressing surface
  • Sewing machine

DIRECTIONS:

  • 62"x 74" Quilt

  • Use an accurate 1/4" seam throughout. Read all instructions before cutting.
  • Make your templates from Diagram 1 (or use the purchased diamond template)
  • Cut thirteen 4 1/2"x WOF strips of each of the dark and medium fabrics.

  • Using the diamond template, cut 88 pieces from each of the dark and medium strips for a total of 176.
  • From the light fabric, cut sixteen 4 3/4"x WOF strips. Use the triangle template and cut 1/2 triangles.
  • Follow Diagram 2 and sew into rows as shown. Rows 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15 will follow Illustration A. Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 will follow Illustration B. Press as you sew pressing odd rows down and even rows up.
  • Sew the 16 rows together in order, following the layout shown in Diagram 3. Trim off triangle points on the top and bottom of your quilt to even it up.
  • Sandwich the quilt top, batting and backing. Quilt as desired.
  • Trim and bind the quilt.

  • Craft Hack Tips and Tricks:

    • To keep pieces in the right order for sewing, lay them on the floor in rows 1 - 16 and label top triangle in each row. At this time you can double check to see if all are lined up correctly to form tumbling blocks. Then stack pieces in each row from top to bottom and follow layout to sew each stack together.
