Flannel Pillow Cover

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 3/4yd flannel
  • 2 1/2yds bias tape maxi piping
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Zipper foot for sewing machine

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Makes one 18" square pillow cover.
  2. Cut one 19"x 19" flannel square and two 13"x 19" flannel pieces. Set aside the flannel square and turn one long side of the other two pieces in 1/4". Press with iron and then fold in an inch, press again and secure with straight pins. Edgestitch with sewing machine. Set aside.
  3. Match raw edge of the bias tape piping to the raw, right side edge of the flannel square. Pin in place around the entire square. Overlap the ends of the piping by a few inches and taper the raw edges in towards the seam allowance. Baste into place using the zipper foot on your sewing machine.
  4. Position the two smaller flannel pieces right sides together on top of the larger flannel piece, raw edges matching and the sewn edge sides overlapping in the interior.
  5. Pin into place and sew all the way around the edges with the zipper foot following the edge of the interior piping.
  6. Trim corners to remove excess bulk and turn right side out.

Self Binding Fleece Blanket with Sherpa trim (48x 60)

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Fleece fabric for front of blanket
  • Sherpa fabric for the back of the blanket
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut front of blanket 43"x 55"
  2. Cut back of blanket 53"x 65"
  3. Mark the center on each edge of both rectangles.
  4. Make a mark in each corner 1/4" in from each edge of front blanket piece.
  5. Match small and large rectangles right sides together, matching the center of each side. Pin along all sides of the small rectangle up to the mark in the corner. There will be excess from the large rectangle at each corner.
  6. Stitch along the edges using 1/4" seam allowance. Stop and start at each corner at mark.
  7. Leave a 4" opening on one side to turn blanket right side out.
  8. To make mitered corners, pull the center fabric away from the outside fabric matching up raw outside edges to create a triangle. Fold the center fabric in half diagonally on itself, matching seams. This should create a triangle next to the triangle flap. Sew from edge of center fabric to edge and trim to 1/4". Continue with all corners.
  9. Turn blanket right side out.
  10. Topstitch 1/4" from binding on center fabric closing the opening in the process.

Tufted Circle Pillow

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 1/2yd flannel
  • 7/8" cover button kit
  • Polyfil
  • 6" upholstery needle
  • 18" waxed button thread
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

PILLOW

  1. Cut out two 17" flannel circles and a 4"x 60" rectangular side piece.
  2. Match up the long raw edge of the side piece to the raw edge of the circle and pin into place, stopping short of pinning the end. At the end, overlap the short edges of the side piece with right sides together. Pin into place, away from the circle, and sew together. Press open the seam with an iron, and finish pinning onto the circle.
  3. Sew around the circle.
  4. Cut a little triangle into the seam allowance every 1/2" around the circle, being careful not to cut through the stitching. Notching will reduce the bulk of the seam allowance and allow the seam to lie flat.
  5. Repeat steps to attach the second circle, but this time leave a 3" opening in order to flip the pillow right side out and insert Polyfil.
  6. Once the pillow is filled, blind stitch the opening closed.
  7. Measure and make a mark at the center of the center of the cushion on both sides and set aside.

BUTTON

  1. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to create two covered buttons. Using the upholstery needle and thread, knot the thread around one button backing by doubling the thread, inserting the looped end through the button backing shank and then pass the cut end through the looped end and pull tight. Insert the cut ends of the thread through the eye of the needle and pull through the center markings on the pillow, pulling until the button is flat against the pillow. Take the thread off the needle and insert one thread through the shank of the second button. Begin to knot it with the second thread, and continue to pull the knot tight until the cushion is tufted. Tie a second knot and trim the thread ends.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fairly easy blanket… For any truly beginners out there, they did not put how much fabric to get for the blanket. You need: 1 5/8 yards of 43” width flannel. 1 7/8 yards of 58-59” width sherpa.
