SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- Sewing Organizer Template
- 2/3yd each of two printed cottons
- 1/4 yd solid color cotton
- 1/4yd 1/4" foam
- 1/2yd medium weight Interfacing
- 2 yards of 1/2 inch bias tape
- Quilter’s ruler
- Rotary cutter and cutting mat, or scissors
- Straight pins
- Iron
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Embroidery scissors
- 1/4" wide elastic, about 2 inches long
- Safety pin
- 1" square of Hook and Loop Tape
DIRECTIONS:
- Cut out all the pieces following the Sewing Organizer Template:
- Inner (Two Cotton, Two Interfacing)
- Inner Right Pockets (Two Cotton, Two Interfacing)
- Inner Left Flap (Two Cotton, Two Interfacing)
- Inner Left Pocket (One Cotton, One Interfacing)
- Center (One Cotton, One Interfacing)
- Center Foam (One Foam)
- Outer (One Cotton, One Interfacing, One Foam)
- Outer Pocket (One Cotton, One Interfacing)
- In addition, cut out a piece of the solid cotton and a piece of interfacing that is 2 1/2"x 16".
- Use iron to adhere each Interfacing piece to its corresponding Cotton Piece.
- Construct the Inner right side:
- Sew bias tape to the hypotenuse of each Inner Right Pocket triangle.
- Place triangles on top of an Inner rectangle piece, right angles of each triangle matching the righthand top and bottom corners of the rectangle. Baste along the top, down the righthand side, and along the bottom. Set aside.
Construct the Inner left side:
- Place the two Inner Left Flap pieces wrong sides together and baste along the edges. Sew bias tape onto the sides and bottom of the Inner Left Flap. Baste Inner Left Flap centered on the top of the other Inner rectangle piece.
- Iron in the short sides of the Inner Left Pocket 1/4". Next, create a sewing guide for the pocket by folding and ironing down the creases: First, fold pocket matching the short, folded sides together, and iron down the center crease. Open the center crease up, and match both folded sides to the center crease, and iron down those two creases.
- Open those two creases back up, leave the short sides folded in, and sew bias tape onto the top of the Inner Left Pocket.
- Baste Inner Left Pocket centered along the bottom of the Inner rectangle piece.
Construct the Center:
- Fold the Center piece in half by matching the short edges together, and iron down the crease. Next, mark your seam allowance on the raw edge by folding it in 3/8" and ironing down the crease. Place the Center Foam piece on the wrong side of the Center piece, match up its long edge with the center crease. Baste along the short edges of the Center Foam Piece. Before completing the Center piece, determine the placement and sew into place the elastic strap that will later hold your embroidery scissors. Fold your Center piece in half wrong sides together and, on the side that does not have the basted foam, place your embroidery scissors and make a mark on either side of the handle. Fold the elastic in about 1/4" and sew into place on one mark. Then snip the other side of the elastic so that it extends 1/4" past the remaining mark, then fold it in 1/4" and sew into place on the remaining mark.
- Fold the Center piece in half wrong sides together, and sew down the top and bottom edges, and baste along the raw side edge. Position Center piece onto right Inner piece, matching the raw edges together and baste into place. With right sides together, place left Inner piece on top of the Center and right Inner piece, matching raw edges. Pin into place and sew down the long left side. Open up and iron down the sewn center fold. Set aside.
Construct the Outer Pocket:
- Start by making the strap that will hold the organizer together: With right sides together, fold the piece of 2 1/2"x 16" cotton, matching long edges, and iron down the crease. Sew along the long raw edge. Place safety pin at one short end and use it to pull the long tube right side out. Iron flat.
- Place the loop piece of the hook and loop tape an inch from one short raw strap edge. Sew into place. Position that strap edge onto the center of the long edge of the Outer Pocket piece. Baste into place along the raw edges, and also baste the strap into place where it meets the other raw edge of the Outer Pocket.
- Sew bias tape along the long, raw edge of the Outer Pocket (the side where the strap edge meets the pocket edge. Set aside.
Construct the Outer piece:
- Fold the Outer piece in half, short edges together, and iron down the center crease.
- Open up the Outer piece and place right side up in front of you. To sew on the outer pocket, turn the pocket upside down and place the long raw edge onto the crease. When you look at it, the bias tape edge should be on the opposite side from where it will end up when sewn. Scoot the raw edge 3/8" past the center crease on the Outer piece (for the seam allowance). Tuck the length of the strap in so that it is sandwiched between the Outer piece and the Outer Pocket. Pin into place and sew down the long, raw edge of the Outer pocket. Fold the Outer Pocket so that the right side is out and iron down the sewn edge. Place the Outer Piece onto the foam Outer piece and baste along all edges. Set aside.
Combine the Inner and Outer pieces:
- With right sides together, place the Inner piece on top of the Outer piece. Pin in place and sew along the top and bottom edges. Turn right side out and iron edges flat. Sew bias tape over raw side edges.
- Finish the organizer by finishing the strap. Fold the organizer in half, place the hook piece of the hook and loop tape onto the loop piece and fold strap over top. Fold the raw edge of the strap under and trim it about 1" past the hook and loop tape. Mark the position of the hook tape onto the bottom fold of the strap, then unfold the strap and sew hook piece into place.
- Refold the edge of the strap. Turn the raw edge in 3/8" and sew. Topstitch the folded strap edge.

Useless without templates
First item on the supply list is "Sewing Organizer Templates." First step in directions is to cut all the pieces following the Sewing Organizer Template." If not provided - or SOLD - then this "Free" project is not doable and not free.

No links
There are no links to templates or fabric measurements. Makes constructing this a “let’s guess” project. Great project though, would like to make it. The instructions are minimal. Would be nice if there is an update soon.

Poorly written. Needed pictures, and pattern pieces labeled with alphabet.

Need illustrations!
I've been looking for something like this, but without at least one image of all parts of the finished project I'm not sure I could put it together. There are instructions such as "place in the opposite direction from its final position" for a part we have no picture of! How would we know where this is? And if the pieces are incorrect when printed at 100%, it altogether seems hardly worth the effort unless you have time to kill.

Not enough pictures of finished project
More pictures of the finished project from many different angles would be extremely helpful with construction. The instructions are difficult to follow without a clear understanding of how the finished project should look. It's such a cute project with cute fabric (from the one picture that is provided), so I am going to try to make it anyway.

Pattern is there, but sizing not great
The person who couldn't find the templates wasn't looking very hard. Next to where it says HOW TO MAKE IT, click GET PATTERNS. Then click the button that says DOWNLOAD PATTERN(S). Depending on your browser settings, it may open automatically or you may have to open the .pdf manually. However, at 100% the pieces as shown are not actually full size. Not a big problem since most of them are rectangles or triangles and you can measure those, but the piece that has a curved edge really ought to be presented at correct size when printing.
