Beginner 1-2 Hours

SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Toilet Paper Rolls or Paper Towel Rolls Cut to 4" Lengths
  • Bat Foam Shapes
  • Chenille Stems (black and purple pipe cleaners)
  • Acrylic Paints (this example used yellow, orange, iridescent purple, grey, and white)
  • Glitter glue (this example used purple, silver, and black)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Assorted Googly/Wiggle Eyes
  • Glue and Tape or Hot Glue Gun/Glue Gun Sticks

DIRECTIONS:

  1. For this example, twenty bats were built.
  2. Using acrylic paints and glitter glue, paint and decorate the upcycle paper rolls—these will be the bats' bodies.
  3. Paint and decorate the wings of each foam bat.
  4. Following the curved shape of the wings, remove the heads from the foam bats. Glue the foam bat heads to the front inside of the painted paper rolls.
  5. Glue wings to the back of each bat's body.
  6. Add googly/wiggle eyes.
  7. To make each pair of bat legs, fold one chenille stem in half and cut. Measure and cut 1" off each chenille stem. Wrap this 1" piece around the end of each leg to make the "claws". Glue to the inside of the paper roll.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Paper towel rolls can be easily cut to 4" lengths if you need more paper rolls.
  • Use double-stick tape to reinforce any glue areas as needed.
  • Great as hanging decoration, centerpiece, or party favor.
