SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Upcycled Sweater
  • Embroidered Special Occasion Sequin Fabric
  • 18mm Rotary Cutter
  • Cutting Mat
  • Straight Pins
  • Sharp Hand Sewing Needle
  • Matching Thread
  • Optional: Thread Snips
  • Optional: Sewing Weights

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut out Special Occasion Fabric Embroidery with small 18mm Rotary Cutter; you could also use a small, sharp scissor. Thread snips are helpful for removing pieces of mesh in small corners.
  2. Position embroidery cut-outs on sweater with straight pins carefully positioned through the centers of the embroidery.
  3. Attach embroidery cut-outs to sweater by hand sewing with a blanket stitch (described below) or alternatively, attach smaller sections of embroidery onto the sweater using a Fabric Glue.

BLANKET STITCH:

  1. Start with the needle in the under the sweater and poke out through the interior of the embroidery edge.
  2. Pull through and insert the needle through the sweater along the embroidery edge.
  3. Poke the needle out through the interior of the embroidery edge again, right next to your first stitch.
  4. Begin to pull the thread, but stop when a small loop of thread remains. Pull the needle through the loop, then pull the thread taut.
  5. Repeat the last step again - inserting the needle again through the interior of the embroidery edge, right next to your second stitch. Begin to pull the thread, stop when a small loop of thread remains. Pull the needle through the loop, then pull the thread taut.
  6. Give the next stitch a little bit of space from the first three, and again pull the thread to form a small loop, pull the needle through, then pull the thread taut.
  7. Repeat around the perimeter of the embroidery.

JOANN HACKS:

  • When attaching embroidery with fabric glue, pattern sewing weights are helpful for keeping the embroidery in place as you glue.
  • Place the weight in the center of the section you're adhering, lift the small section of embroidery up onto the bean bag weight, add a light amount of glue, press the section down, and scoot the bean bag over top and repeat the process for the next section.
  • Apply glue with a small craft brush.
