SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Band cotton fabrics
  • Denim jacket
  • 10mm dome studs
  • Dritz Craft Cover Button Kit
  • Disappearing ink pen (optional)
  • Earring backs (optional)
  • Super Glue (optional)
  • Basic Sewing Supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut Band Cotton Fabric into squares and sew together, ironing the seam flat each time. Sew a line of square patches together, set aside, then sew the next line of square patches together. Sew the first line of patches to the second. Continue to piece your band patchwork together in this way.
  2. When finished, pin generously to the back of the jacket, folding in around the edges and ironing flat. Sew each patch seam to the jacket, starting in the center seams and moving outward. Topstitch along the edge of the patchwork.
  3. Mark a pattern for your studs with a disappearing ink pen, and apply the studs according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Use the Craft Cover Button Kit to make buttons with the cotton band fabric. Use the included tools and follow the kit instructions to make the buttons, then either hand sew the buttons right onto the jacket (use the button backing with the loop on the back) or glue an earring backing to the back of the button (use the button backing without the loop on the back.)

JOANN HACKS:

  • Add another color dimension to your patchwork or buttons by first dying any of the band cotton fabric with dye prior to sewing or turning into a button.
