SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • Flannel shirt
  • Licensed band fabric, various sizes
  • Dark Rit® dye
  • Stainless steel dye pot or clean plastic bucket
  • Rubber gloves
  • Bleach (optional)
  • Iron-on embellishments
  • Basic sewing supplies

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut fabric into patch sizes. Turn the edges of each patch in 1/2" and iron. Attach patches onto flannel shirt with straight pins and either machine or hand sew into place.
  2. Set up a dye bath following the Rit® dye instructions. Dampen your shirt and hold one corner of the flannel shirt in the dye bath, until you achieve your desired color, keeping in mind that the color will be lighter once the dye is rinsed and dried. Dying and rinsing a scrap piece of fabric first is a helpful indicator of the dye opacity.
  3. After rinsing out the dye from the first dip, wring out extra water and dip the opposite corner of the shirt into the dye bath for the same amount of time.
  4. Optional, once you’ve dumped the dye bath from your pot or bucket and rinsed it, lay your shirt as flat possible on the bottom of the sink and sprinkle a few over-dyed areas with bleach. Transfer shirt into the pot or bucket and throw right into a normal washing machine cycle.
  5. After washing and drying, attach iron-on decals following the manufacturer’s instructions.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Layer dye colors by dipping your shirt in a dark color dye, and then dipping just the edge of that same spot in black dye.
