DIRECTIONS:
To find the downloadable patterns click on the "GET PATTERNS" tab above.- Elongate pattern to floor length dress. Measure from waist to floor. Add paper to pattern at bottom curves of front and back. Extend side tapers to meet new bottom edge. Construct dress. Use measurement from waist to bottom of dress for front drape of belt.
- Cut gold fabric: 2" belt: 1 @ 5" W x L (waist measurement) + 2 1/2", Interfacing 1 @ 2" W x L (same as fabric), front drape, 2" shorter than waist to floor of dress: see pattern (for size 5 dress), cut 2 fabric, 1 Interfacing. Fuse interfacing to WS of corresponding fabric, 1/2" in from one long edge of belt and matching edges on front drape. Belt: Fold 1/2" in on both short edges. Press. Fold 1/2" in on both long edges. Press. Fabric tape may be used to hold the folds. Fold in half lengthwise, do not sew or tape. Add trim. Fold and press trim to reduce width to 1 1/4" W. Mark 3/8" in from both long sides of belt. Fabric tape trim centered on belt, fold both raw ends in to match raw ends of fabric. Sew close to edges of belt to encase all raw edges. Front drape: Fabric tape 2" trim centered to RS of one fabric with interfacing matching top and bottom raw ends. Place fabric WST. Sew 1/2" SA leaving top 5" open to turn. Trim corners. Turn RSO. Push out corners with dowel or chopstick. Press. Sew close to both long sides of trim. On WS of fabric, mark center of belt and center of top of front drape at start of taper. Lay front drape on flat surface WSU. Lay belt on top matching centers. Fold over top of drape to wrap belt (raw edge will be on the bottom front of the belt). Press. Fabric tape in place. Set aside.
- Wig: Mark beanie. One line 3" L on the center of the crown from front to back (center part of hair) and concentric circles starting 1" up from bottom edge. Place beanie on head, center line centered front to back. Mark side to side placement for bangs at bottom edge of beanie. Remove from head. Mark lines from sides of bangs tapering to meet at center part line, 3" up from bottom edge of beanie. Wrap yarn around 5" L cardboard. Cut yarn at both ends of cardboard while holding the center of the yarn. Sew yarn to lowest line on beanie for bangs. Lay each strand of yarn tight to one another. Alternate: sew center of yarn to beanie prior to cutting loop ends. Zig zag stitch over yarn. Repeat for additional layers for bangs adding 2" to length for each layer up on beanie. Determine desired length of side/back hair from lowest edge of beanie. Cut 3-4" W cardboard L + 2" to wrap yarn for lowest circle on beanie. Cut yarn at one end of cardboard while holding the opposite ends of yarn. Sew yarn same as bangs. Repeat for additional layers adding an additional 2" for each circle. Sew the final layer of hair on the center line of the crown from the bangs to the end of line at the back of the crown. Yarn will be longer in the back. Trim lengths to blunt cut. Run fingers through yarn often to settle lengths of yarn.
- Headband: Place wig on head. Use sewing tape measure to determine circumference of headband. Cut cardboard as per material list. Lay circle on headband, 1" off center of long strip. Mark 1" from short end of long side of long strip (overlap area, leave free of trims). Set aside.
- Collar: Print two of pattern. Tape together on center lines. Cut cardboard. Bend cardboard collar at shoulders. Do not apply any decorative items that are not flexible to this area. Flatten collar. Stack circle on top of collar center and stack both on top of collar. Set next to headband and circle for belt.
- Position decorative trims and gems on cardboard accessories. Leave space at back edge of collar for two grommets on each side. Determine colors for cardboard layers. Photograph each accessory for reference. Paint individual cardboard parts with white paint. Let dry. Add color paint to cardboard parts. Optional: to age colors stipple Antique Gold over 24K Gold and Moody Blue over Caribbean paint. Let dry. Use hot glue to glue cardboard layers together. Use photos as reference to reposition trims and gems. Set registration marks using light pencil lines and/or set pins into cardboard at corners of trims. Adhere trims and gems using small beads of Power Tac. Let dry. Bend band for headband. Overlap ends to 1" mark and hot glue together. Add 2 small grommets or eyelets to each short back edge of collar. Lace cording through eyelets. Adhere circle to center of trim on front drape of belt with Power Tac. Let dry.
JOANN HACKS:
- Size of collar may be adjusted. Use the pattern for facing of the dress to determine curves. Eliminate seam allowance.
- When cutting cardboard shapes that will be bent, run the corrugations in the cardboard opposite from the direction of bend. If necessary, score the back of the cardboard in the valleys of the corrugations for sharp, clean bends.
- Double fold 1/4" bias tape may be wrapped around the edges of cardboard to soften the edges that will be next to skin or fabric that may snag. Apply Fabri Tac next to one flat edge of cardboard. Press the bias tape in place keeping the folded edge equidistant from the cardboard edge. Make sure that the tape will wrap to the opposite side of the cardboard. Flip and adhere the opposite side of tape. If the bias tape is painted lightly sand over the tape to soften.
- To attach metal bead strands to hang down from the sides of the headband, thread embroidery floss through small beads knotting around one bead at the end. Sew the opposite end of thread through cardboard on sides of headband.
