SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Lampshade, non-paper
  • Iron
  • Rotary cutter & cutting board
  • Ruler
  • Roll paper
  • Pencil
  • Trim scissors
  • Blue tape
  • Customizer fabric, Batiste
  • Loctite spray adhesive, high performance
  • Mineral spirits
  • Rag
  • Beacon Fabri-Tac permanent fabric adhesive
  • Spray area
  • Bias tape, double fold, extra wide: to finish top and bottom of frame of smooth shade / double fold, to finish inside edges of bias tape made of Batiste fabric, optional

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Remove any raised trim from lampshade.
  2. Make a paper pattern. Lay lampshade down on side with the bottom seam 1/2" from bottom corner of paper. Mark the seam locations, at the top and bottom of the shade, onto the paper. Slowly roll and trace along the bottom edge of the lampshade onto the paper. Mark the end location when back to seam. Repeat for the top curve. Connect the top and bottom seam lines. Use ruler to add 1/2" to the top and bottom curves. Add 1" to one straight end. Cut out pattern.
  3. Press fabric. Transfer pattern to WS of fabric. For geometric patterns lay the pattern at an angle on the fabric. Cut fabric. Fold and press one short end back 1/2". Apply a small bead of Fabri-Tac under fold and press.
  4. SMOOTH LAMPSHADE: Mask off center of frame with paper and tape to avoid overspray. Spray lampshade with Loctite. Line up short raw end of fabric with seam. Center fabric between top and bottom frames. Fabric will lay over frames. Press from the center of the fabric toward the frames. Press the fabric to lay flat at the wire frames. At the folded end an additional spray of adhesive may be necessary. Lay a piece of paper over the attached fabric. Flip the folded end of fabric WSU on top of the paper. Lay another sheet of paper on the opposite side of the folded back fabric. This will expose only the WS of the folded fabric to the spray adhesive. Spray, remove the paper and press the fabric in place. Let dry.
  5. PLEATED LAMPSHADE: Measure circumference of largest circle of lampshade frame. Measure H of frame. Cut fabric: W = 2 x circumference, H = H + 2". Pleat top edge of fabric with 1" pleats. Press pleats 1/2" from edge of fabric. Sew 1/2" from raw edge to hold pleats. Fit fabric over lampshade. Short ends should overlap keeping baste stitch above top of frame. Use Fabri-Tac to adhere one short end to shade at seam of shade. Place a small bead of adhesive under each pleat to adhere top edge of fabric to shade. Let dry.
  6. Pull bottom edge of fabric tight and form wider pleats. Start at the seam. Keep pleats perpendicular to the horizontal members of frame. Place one pin through each pleat into the frame to temporarily hold the pleat. Adjustments may be made to the width of pleats if a visible shift from vertical is noted. Attach pleats same as top edge. Let dry.
  7. Trim excess fabric beyond the top and bottom frames with trim scissors.
  8. Cover top and bottom frames and raw edges of fabric with bias tape. Bias tape may be made from the same fabric as shade cover. Determine desired W of tape by measuring from top of frame down onto outside of shade x 2. Add 1" for 1/2" wrap over inside of shade (this should cover wire frame and settle tape onto inside of styrene of shade). Length: circumference of wire frame + 1". Fold both long edges, WST, to center. Press. Fold in half WST. Press.
  9. Apply bias tape to top and bottom frames. For smooth application of bias tape to lampshade frame, glue folded sides of bias tape to WS of tape and press. Open center fold. Attach the bias tape to the outside of the shade first. Apply a small bead of adhesive close to the WS edge of tape and top edge of frame, a small section at a time. Settle the WS of the bias tape fold centered on the top of the frame. Press the tape to the frame and the outside of the shade. Check to ensure that the tape edge runs parallel to top edge of the frame. Open the tape when close to the end. Fold back the end 1/2" and glue. Continue attaching tape to frame overlapping the folded end over the raw end.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Take care to avoid stretching fabric when cutting and attaching to shade.
  • When using spray adhesive clear the nozzle after each use.
  • Invert the can and spray. Wipe nozzle with Mineral Spirits.

This project looks so complicated with only words-I refuse to even try it. Please add step by step PHOTOS with your instructions. Maybe a video lesson would be even better.
