SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- T-shirt
- 1yd Snap Tape
- Basic Sewing Supplies
- Marking Pen
- Dye (if dying shirt)
- Optional: Masking Tape
DIRECTIONS:
- Try on the t-shirt and mark the location of desired opening with masking tape or a pin.
- Draw a line from the neckline to the side seam under the arm, intersecting the desired opening point. To keep fabric from stretching, stitch 1/8" on both sides of mark, ending at a point with a pivot.
- Cut along the marked line, stopping at the pivot point. Do not cut through the stitching.
- Cut snap tape the length of the opening plus 1" on both sides
- Right sides together, place one side of snap tape along top cut edge, centering 1st snap on neckline, and stitch with a very narrow seam allowance (1/8" or less) from neckline to point. (Making sure to leave at least 1/2" of tape beyond neckline and point)
- Fold tape over and edge stich, stopping and back tacking at point.
- Fold back top edge of tape 1/4" and fold again 1/4" and stitch to finish top edge.
- Lay other part of tape over the one that was stitched down and align snaps.
- With right sides together, pin tape to edge on bottom side of t-shirt and edge stitch to t-shirt along cut edge to point.
- Open tape up to lay flat, press and edge stitch tape flat from neckline to bottom point.
- At bottom point, bring bottom of snap tape to inside of t-shirt and stitch both tapes together from point to other side of tape, confirming that snaps line up.
- Fold under seam tape extending beyond neckline to clean finish neckline edge.
- Stitch down along open edge from neckline to end, and across snap tape to point.
- Repeat process on other side.
JOANN HACKS:
- Using scrap fabric and a strip of snap tape make a short mockup of snap layout to eliminate confusion while working.
