DIRECTIONS:

NOTE: Whenever sanding old paint or vanish, it is always recommended to check for lead. Testing kits can be found at hardware stores.
  1. Remove existing fabric from the settee. You will need pliers to pull out staples and any trim.
  2. Save the trim if possible.
  3. Sand the finish of the wood so that the spray paint will adhere well. You just need to rough the surface and take off the shine of the wood.
  4. Place the furniture in a well-ventilated area with plastic underneath. Mask off upholstered areas.
  5. Spray the first coat of white spray paint onto the wood. You will need to spray 2-3 coats of the white paint first letting it dry between layers and then spray your topcoat of the pearl mist spray paint.
  6. Check the underneath fabric and padding. Replace if it is in poor condition.
  7. Lay the velvet fabric on top of the settee to measure where to cut your fabric. Before cutting allow an extra inch in the measurement on each side of the fabric for stapling later. When you are cutting the fabric make sure the nap of the fabric is going in the same direction on all sides so that the sheen in the same lightness once it is completed.
  8. Center the fabric on the seat part first. Staple in the front middle and work towards the outside edges pulling the fabric taught and smooth as you work.
  9. Use a sewing machine to cover the existing trim with the new fabric.
  10. Using a hot glue gun, attach the trim on top where there are staples. This gives it a nice, finished look.

JOANN HACKS:

  • Don't pull on the fabric too tight in any one direction as you are stapling.
