SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Denim Shorts
  • Bleach
  • Measuring Cup (for Bleach)
  • Bucket
  • Rubber Bands
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Distilled White Vinegar
  • Cotton Fabric
  • PellonĀ® Wonder-Under Interfacing
  • Iron & Ironing Board
  • Embroidery Floss
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Optional: Leather Thimble
  • Optional: Needle Nose Pliers

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Determine how far up the short you'd like to bleach and rubber band the top of the short to that point.
  2. Add bleach to water in a bucket - 1 cup of bleach to 2 cups of water. Fill until there's another liquid to submerge the bottom part of your shorts.
  3. Add the shorts. Make sure the bottom is submerged in the bleach solution, and the top is up out of the way. Let sit in the bleach solution for about 30 minutes, or until you've reached your desired bleach effect. Check often.
  4. Rinse shorts thoroughly with water. Then, fill the bucket with water and add 5 capfuls of the vinegar. This is an important step to stop the bleaching process on the shorts which would damage the shorts over time.
  5. Submerge the shorts all the way in the vinegar solution and allow to sit for about 10 minutes.
  6. Remove from vinegar solution and rinse thoroughly with water again.
  7. Allow to dry.
  8. For the patches, place the Wonder-Under over your pockets paper-side down and trace the shape of the pockets with a pencil on the rough side. Cut out the shape you traced and adhere it to the wrong side of your cotton fabric, following the Wonder Under directions (press for 5-8 seconds with hot, dry iron.) Let cool and cut cotton into the Wonder Under shape.
  9. Peel off paper backing and place rough side down over pocket. Cover with a damp press cloth and press for 10-15 seconds with iron at Wool setting. Repeat, lifting and overlapping iron until fabric is fused. Remove press cloth and iron to eliminate excess moisture.
  10. Repeat for any other pockets you wish to cover, or any additional patch shapes you wish to make.
  11. For the stitching, thread your needle with your embroidery floss and make running stitches through your patched denim - push the needle under and over the patch so that about three stitches are loaded onto your needle before you pull it through - see JOANN Hacks below for more on this.
  12. You can keep the distance between stitches about the same or vary the spacing for visual interest. You can keep the lines straight or curve them or change direction. For a plus-sign shape, you can run your stitches horizontally for a whole section and then go back and run your stitches vertically over top of the previous stitching, making the plus shape.

JOANN HACKS:
  • Pushing the needle through the denim can be tough; using a leather thimble to protect your finger is helpful. Also, instead of using your finger to push the needle through the stiff denim, you can use a needle nose plier to pull the needle through without poking your finger at all.
