Intermediate Weekend Project
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Plastic drawer storage unit
  • Rust-Oleum®, 2X Ultra Cover, Paint & Primer Spray Paint
  • Dowels, Wood, 5/8"x 12", 1 @ 4" for each 12" W drawer
  • Saw
  • 100 grit sandpaper
  • Ruler
  • Sewing tape measure
  • Outdoor Vinyl Mesh fabric, size dependent on drawer sizes
  • Beacon Quick Grip Adhesive, Clear
  • Painter's tape
  • Scissors & trim scissors
  • popsicle sticks
  • Spray paint area

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Remove drawers from unit. Set aside. Spray frame of unit desired color. Let dry.
  2. Determine areas of drawers to be covered, front, back and sides. Take measurements of height and length. Cut vinyl to fit. On smaller units one length of fabric will wrap all sides. Do not cut to length until attaching the last side.
  3. Cut the vinyl mesh leaving one horizontal band at the top and the bottom of the height. Attach the vinyl to the drawer starting on one side. Apply adhesive in long beads at the top, bottom and in between along one side. Quickly smear the glue with a popsicle stick to distribute a thin, even coat. Press the vinyl in place. Use the flat side of a clean popsicle stick to press the vinyl firmly to the plastic drawer. Use trim scissors to cut notches in vinyl at glides of drawers. Repeat. Let dry overnight.
  4. Cut dowels into lengths for handles. Sand cut ends to soften edges. Mark the center top of one front of drawer. Mark the center of the length of one dowel. Determine height of handle on drawer. This may correspond to a horizontal band in the vinyl mesh. Set the drawer with the front facing up. It may be necessary to place a weight inside the back of the drawer while the handle glue is setting. Place a generous bead of glue along one side of the dowel and press in place on drawer front matching centers. Wrap two lengths of Painter's tape to temporarily hold the handle in place as glue sets. Repeat. Let dry overnight.
  5. Flip unit upside down on a flat surface covered with a cloth. Press wheels in place.
  6. Remove tape from drawer handles. Place drawers into slots in unit.
