Beginner Weekend Project
SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
  • Cotton or linen placemats
  • Cotton or linen napkins
  • 24x24 sheet of plastic
  • Iron/ironing surface

DIRECTIONS:
  1. Swirl

  2. Lay the damp placemat or napkin on the sheet of plastic. Twist the fabric in the middle in a circular motion. Once you make it into a ball, hold it in the flat ball using the rubber bands.
  3. Let it sit for 4 hours and then rinse with cold water until water runs clear.
  4. Triangle Fold

  5. Lay the damp fabric on the sheet of plastic. Fold the fabric in an accordion into a row. Starting at one side, fold it over to make a triangle. Fold it back the other way to make the next triangle. Continue this until you reach the other side. Secure it with rubber bands. Place the dye into a glass bowl. Saturate each side in the bowl. Let it sit for 4-6 hours. Take off the rubber bands, unfold and rinse with cold water.
  6. Ice Dyed

  7. Lay the damp fabric on the sheet of plastic. Scrunch the fabric into a pile. Hold it scrunched with the rubber bands. Apply the dye randomly to the fabric. Let it sit for 4-6 hours. Take off the rubber bands and rinse with cold water.
  8. Striped Rows

  9. Lay the damp fabric on the sheet of plastic. Fold the fabric in accordion fold horizontally. Secure it with rubber bands. Use the different dyes in stripes on the folded fabric.
  10. Let it sit for 4-6 hours. Take off the rubber bands and rinse with cold water.

JOANN HACKS:
  • If the dye is still too strong after dying the fabric rinse them well with hot water.
