SUPPLIES & TOOLS:
- 1/2yd Cotton Fabric
- 1/8" x 4ft Stretch String
- Toggle Stopper
- Fabric Marker, Chalk Marker, or Pencil
- Fray Check
- Matching Thread
- Basic Sewing Supplies
DIRECTIONS:
- Measure diameter of your bowl and add 8" (Example: 10" bowl + 8" = 18" circle.)
- Cut out a circle from fabric.
- Cover cut edge of circle with Fray Check, allow to dry thoroughly.
- Cut a 8" x 4" piece of fabric. Fold in half, RS together, to make a 4" x 4" square. Sew along the raw edges, leaving a 2" gap.
- Pull RS out through the gap, press with an iron. Edgestitch around the square, closing up the gap.
- Place square in the center of the circle and sew two parallel edges and a parallel line through the center to make your utensil holder.
- Sew two lines of basting stitches around the circle, leaving long thread tails at the ends - the first 1/4" from the edge, the second 1/2" from the edge.
- On the RS of fabric circle, use a marker or pencil to draw around circle 4" from the edge.
- Mark a small 1/4" long buttonhole that is 1/4" from the 4" line (moving outward from the 4" line toward the circle edge.)
- Sew a small buttonhole along that mark. Open center of buttonhole.
- On your ironing board, pull the thread tails of the basting stitches to gather up the edge of the circle. Gather edge until you can match the circle edge to your 4" mark - press with iron as you go and hold creases in place with sewing pins.
- Sew ⅛" from the raw edge, paying special attention around the buttonhole (don't sew over it), all the way around the inner circle.
- Sew another circle 1/2" from the first, paying special attention around the buttonhole (don't sew over it.).
- Cut 1/8" Cord Stretch String 5" less than three times the circumference of the bowl (Example: 18" bowl x 3 = 54" - 5" = 49" piece of cord stretch string.).
- Attach a small safety pin to the cord stretch string, and pull the string through the casing, entering and exiting through the buttonhole. Attach toggle.
JOANN HACKS:
- To draw a near-perfect circle in any size, make a simple compass with string and a pencil - Mark the center of your circle and four points along the circumference. (Example: If your circle is 18", you will mark four points that are 9" from the center.) Tie a length of no stretch string to your pencil, hold the end of the string with your finger at the center of the circle, and draw arcs connecting the four points.
- A cut circle will not fray too much using Fray Check around the edge. Alternatively, you could use pinking shears to cut out the circle.
- Match the utensil holder to the circle center more exactly - on both the fabric circle and the fabric square, fold in half twice, making creases with your iron each time. Unfold, line up square creases to circle creases and pin.
